Kit Connor from #Heartstopper was forced to come out by his own community, at #YoungRoyals there is a discussion about Edvin Ryding and whether his sexuality even matches his character in the series. This discussion is not new and even goes back to Bohemian Rhapsody, Brokeback Mountain or Philadelphia. The question is always the same: Can or should straight people play gay roles? If yes, under what circumstances; if no, why not? What does that do to actors that are out and proud? Here's my little hot take. What do you guys think? Feel free to discuss in the comments! :D #GayActors 🏳️‍🌈

Idfc if an actor is gay or not. They should be hired for a part only for their skill

I think our issues is with straight writers not straight actors since writers are the ones controlling the narrative and how the character gets made and portrayed

I’m fine with queer actors as long as they actually portray the character accurately and aren’t highly stereotypical for example stolas’s actor in helluvaboss has never said anything about being gay yet he portrays the role perfectly

It is a sticky situation and I agree that there doesn't seem to be a simple answer. I think you addressed things well and I agree.

When an actor or actress acts they become a entirely new person it doesn't matter what sexuality they have their personality is when you act you are no longer yourself you are a different person the only thing you have control over is how well you depict that character (so in short it doesn't matter if you are queer or straight what matters is how you portray a character)

Fun Fact: actors just follow orders. Aldough they do have some creative freedom on how they potray their characters the bulk of what they do on screen is the work of script writers and directors. If a gay character is "sterotypical" it's usualy never the fault of the actor but it's on the writing team. But I guess then the question becomes should non-minority writers write minority stories? Personaly I'd say yes as long as they do their reaserch, which is true for about pretty much everything one needs to write. If you don't know what your talking about then it's gona suck regardless of subject matter.

All roles should be offered to every actor (no matter if straight, bi or gay) and given to the best actor (no matter if straight, bi or gay).

I actually don't know why, but I've seen the Bully Herbig films as a Gay child and I always saw them as kind of empowering. I didn't feel like they were talking down to be, because everyone was made fun of, and somehow it was nice to see the overly stereotypical Gay Characters beeing on one level with the other heros. They were not normal, but noone was normal, and at least in my memory, this was the only film I saw back then, where the Gays were not only not the villan, but they were the Hero. somehow they were so obnoxiously stereotypicaly Gay, and still accepted, so I felt like there was no reason why I should not be accepted, not beeing this obnoxious. (Don't get me wrong, today they would not work as such, but for the time, they really had an positive impact on my life)

In a fantastic world where openly gay people are given the same equal chances to play different roles this wouldn't be an issue. But we r not openly queer people struggle to get roles so the little roles about them should be given to them. And the impact of openly gay actors portraying these roles has a huge impact on people who are struggling to accept themselves. So yes these roles should be given to openly queer people

I do not agree with internet mobs harassing actors for the intimate details about their sexuality, or outing people or forcing people to come out. But I think you glossed over the real issue too quickly. Out actors do not get considered for roles for straight characters and then have to compete with straight actors for queer roles. That's the core issue in all this. Actors come out and suddenly they're no longer star material? Let's keep the same energy of, "it doesn't matter if an actor is gay! Talent is what's matter" for the Out Actors who face marginalization in the industry.

No, the industry already gatekeeps gay actors out of straight positions, they shouldn't gatekeep gay actors out of gay positions too.

If an actor is believable in his roll, it just does not matter if the character, or the actor is gay or straight. What matters is if the actor preformed the roll well and looked the part while playing it. If it is only fair that only gay actors play gay rolls, then it is only fair that only straight actors play straight rolls. That would be absurd because it limits all actors. It would be like saying only a scientist could play a scientist in media, or on stage. I'm just happy seeing more and better representation of different people than we had decades ago. That isn't just queer people, but also people of different racial, and cultural backgrounds. Just for the record, I'm an old white queer. I'm a cis gender homosexual.

In my experience the only film that got it extremely right in what queer youth experiences are like is the 2023 film close but even then it wasn’t a full queer film but there is one coming out soon that does look like a great interpretation of what it’s like being a queer youth and discovering your sexuality and it’s called Young Hearts and I can’t wait to see it. It’s films like those that give me ideas to make films

The issue with straight actors being given gay roles is that it takes away the opportunity from an actor who is actually gay/bi. I know this doesn't sound like a big deal but Hollywood AND Broadway has and still is prejudiced in giving straight roles to gay actors despite the fact that they could act straight, and this is due to marketing and selling the fantasy that you could be with this guy, aka, fangirls fawning over an actor = money. And this isnt only it, there are WAY more straight roles than there are gay, obviously, so then gay actors end up with very little to choose from and those are being taken away by straight guys, which leads back to marketing. The movie is more digestible is they can portray the characters in a more "straight" way and be able to attract both the straight girls and gaybait the gays. The problem has never been if a straight guy can "act gay", the issue lies in them taking away the little amount of roles that can be occupied by gay actors already.

You explained how I feel perfectly. I get both sides. The way I view it straight people should be allowed to play queer roles if they fit the criteria, and are an ally ofc, but whenever possible the role should go to a queer person. I think aa great example is the cast of Young Royals, where the main characters are two gay lovers, one is openly gay, the other to my knowledge unlabeled (he hasn’t come out to explicitly state he’s straight). That said, I certainly agree that having queer actors feels good. I still remember the joy I felt when I found out every person out of Heartstopper matched the sexuality or identity they played on screen. It also makes it feel that much more real, especially for a story like that one.

I think an actor should be hired based on his skill and if he captures the feel of the character he's playing in the casting tryouts procedures.

If the only fear is reducing the characters to a cheap stereotype, isn't that a complaint best laid on the director's or studio's feet? They're the ones who call the shots, after all.
