I think K.M Wieland has the best idea of what a good flat character arc is. It's a character that has the "truth" at the beginning of the story, and then is being pushed to stop believing the truth but prevails and keeps the truth even through moments of despair. Flat character arcs can be really impactful when they not only keep their truth, but also inspire others to pick up that truth.
One of the best flat characters I've seen is the rabbit in Zootropia. She starts the story believing that all animals are equal. Throughout the story, she is constantly pushed to believe that predators are born to be criminals and "bad people", but she prevails in her truth. And not only does she make the Fox in the story change his belief that he is born to be a criminal to believing he can also be a good guy - she kind of makes the entire city believe that predators deserve equal treatment. And sure, she has absolutely changed through the story, going from a farmgirl to a big city cop (first rabbit to be a cop!) but she still has the same truth as in the beginning.

One thing to note about the flat character arc is that even though the characters nature doesnāt fundamentally change, they still LEARN something. They still have to reaffirm their beliefs as the environment changes around them. And the environment MUST change.
Great video! I needed this for sure šš

Tomorrow I (hopefully) finally finish a novel Iāve been slowly working on for just under a year. Actually itās going to be my first ever completed story. I just wanted to shout out Abby bc she was a huge inspiration to me since I decided to take the plunge with writing my first ever contemporary ya romance/coming of age after reading 100 Days of Sunlight. Iāve learned so much with this project and more than once Abbyās write with me videos were the extra little push I needed to not give up. Anyway just wanted to thank you and possibly inspire others to not give up šš¼ love you and God bless š«¶š¼

Thanks for finally addressing the criticism of you guys having āignoredā the topic of flat character arcs so far! š Regarding the question of whether it exists or not: Iāve heard others refer to the flat character arc synonymously with a ātest arcā. In other words, the character already believes in the truth, but the world is trying to corrupt them. Thatās the reason why flat / test arcs are often applied to paragon characters.

in my book, the ending is very much each character having this internal sense of closure, and each character reaches the goal they've been going towards, but at the same time, but also having the realisition that the victory they achieved has become less important, because the characters perspective has changed quite a lot.

A āflatterā arc might be used when you know youāre doing a series right? You canāt have them learn everything in the first book š. Thatās the only time I would rather read a book and not see a significant character arc for the protagonist. Itās just so much more satisfying to me that way.
Iāve written down the idea of making the stakes different for all your characters. I may have gleaned it unconsciously; but I feel like thatās an important concept to nail down before I would start the outlining process - like character development stage.
I think Iāll add that to Abbieās scene card criteria to check in with how the nature and import of each charactersās stakes would influence the behavior and tone of the characters in the scene.
Thank you - another great video!

The flat character arc should be renamed the 'wave' arc, because even if the character ends up the same as a person, they have to go through ups and downs to remain who they are and still be engaging to read.
