If you're a fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, you probably already know about their hit song "Californication." And if you're a drummer - you know that it's one of the most iconic drum tracks in modern rock music.

Join Chad Smith as he breaks down the drumming behind one of their biggest hits. He highlights how crucial rhythm is and how crucial it is to play off the vocals seamlessly. You'll come to appreciate that the band's producer, Rick Rubin, has a penchant for the minimalist approach which challenges drummers to play with intentionality and clarity.

You can hear how good he is when he keeps it simple on the records and when he lets loose live hes an absolute monster. Actually all of them are like that. Thats why its worth listening to their records AND seeing them live.

I love how this sounds like Chad is jamming to a song. He plays so pure and completely let’s go live. Him and Patrick Hallahan are some of my favorites for this style.

Seeing this drum breakdown has me now listening to this song completely differently now, pretty big ghost notes. How often do you hear the idea less is more and it works

I have always loved Chad's humble approach to writing drums. He is capable of so much more, yet he always does exactly what the song calls for. No less and no more.

"support the song, don't play too much and just make it feel good" this is the best advice ever! Thanks, Chad! You're amazing! 💙🥁🙏🏻

I appreciate his strong inclination towards embracing simplicity, despite the potential drawbacks that come from being a drummer who needs to fill gaps.

I like the behind the scenes of song creation. When a perfect song comes out, we don't always know the work that it took to get there.

I really like Chad’s drumming- he’s got a swing to his playing that all the good drummers have.

Love his style of drumming. Those ghost notes he plays quite heavy and it gives the song a bit of a military drumming sound and it sounds totally cool!

Even after all these years, you can see his fun, excitement and an active search for taste - taste he finds with ease, obviously. Great stuff.

As a musician myself I can't tell you how nice it is to hear that there was a previous - less successful - version of this song. We had a guy I'd never met before with no instrumental experience sitting in on a practice last week and he got drunk and got a bit bold, telling us we needed to start our song this way, and end it that way. Entire song was made significantly better because of it. Sometimes it just takes a fresh set of ears!

Man , to this day that snare sound off the entire Californication album is one of my all time favorites, just pops ! Anyone else likes “Easily”??

That little fill right after the gong, coming back to the verse after the solo, was friggin' AWESOME. Almost makes me wish the studio version had it! It gave the solo section a whole different character, and I loved it.

Back in 1997 my drumming lessons in high school would consist an hour of playing along to RHCP songs EVERY WEEK!

I love how this is a song where like, you could teach people that don't know much of playing the drums, and even play yourself for fun. But then you watch him smash it out with all his years of playing it and it just sounds 1000x better
