How bad was Vichy France? After the fall of France in 1940, the French Republic collapsed and was replaced by Philippe Pétain's French State, Vichy France. He set up a dictatorial system and collaborated closely with France's German conquerors with the goal of undoing much of the French Revolution and returning France to its pre-revolutionary hierarchical ways.

Debating French people about world war 2, its become apparent that post war French shame has led to some bizarre retelling of 'history'.

Late to the video but in my opinion Petain was a mixed bag. On one hand he collaborated with the Nazis and condemned countless people to death, but on the other his actions saved hundreds of thousands of young Frenchmen from dying in a continued struggle with Germany and probably saved some cities being glassed too. I actually know a french person who when I asked said that Petain was a flawed man but he thinks he truly did love France and its people. Imo I think we should remember the good things he did/caused as well as the bad.

Honestly Pétain is a weird thing for me if he didn’t sign it someone worst like a French Hitler would’ve took power and more French men and would die with cities being evaporated like Poland, But he did the anti Jewish laws honestly part of me thinks that Pétain implemented these laws just to show obedience to the Germans like what Mussolini did to improve relations with the Germans and what Bulgaria didn’t do as they kept the Jewish. Finally, they never joined the axis.

Petain's life was spared, his underling, Pierre Laval, however was executed after a show trial

Vichy France is a mixed existence as it served both its intended good while also doing the bad forcibly or naively. For me, Petain's anger against the French Republic is understandable. Seeing the invaders inevitably preparing for war using advanced techs while looking at your defenders being bumblebee and flowers doing the bare minimum is quite itchy to think about. Countless of clues. Bountiful warnings. Who's not going to be angry?

Petain (pronounced Pay tau) was not sentenced to life in Prison. He got life in house arrest.

Read Pierre Cot's book, "Triumph of Treason" in which he asks why many of Weygand's troops instead of meeting the invading German army were tasked with rounding up Communists and Socialists in the big cities.
