Empty nesters turn idle property into thriving family farmstead

Chris and Helga Frost created a home based on surrounding themselves with friends and family, and not on maximizing property value or their own personal space.

On land outside the English market town of Godalming, they’ve converted an 18th-century barn into a home for Chris’ brother, two gardeners from Hungary, and their son (and his electronic’s lab). Throughout the property are huts housing geodesic dome builders, allotment gardeners, and even a shed dedicated to a half dozen of Chris’ friends who spend their days rebuilding classic cars.

The couple’s own home is a tiny mashup of two WW1 prisoner-of-war bunkhouses that can grow for family reunions thanks to 4 sets of bunkbeds and a built-in hidden staircase. This hydraulically-powered staircase was Chris’ invention, using a full water bottle for leverage, and it opens to reveal an attic bedroom.

When Chris’ parents died and left them a large home with a lot of land, the couple chose to sell the home and invite friends and family onto the land to join their growing compound:

“My parents idea was that there should be a fence around everything,” explains Chris, “But Helga and I decided that we’d fill it up with people because that was far more fun and as we get old you need a lot of people around you to help whenever you need help so loads of people keep arriving and the people that arrive just arrive because they’re the sort of people that fit into this sort of place.”

Everyone there was a national treasure and "bulging with wisdom". Lovely souls, wish there were more people like Chris and Helga 🙂

Kirsten (& husband). Thank you so much for this. As a Brit in exile for over nearly 50 years I had forgotten this breed of Englishman, self-effacing, brilliant, non-violent, creative, sociable. How our modern world needs more of these types. This is a national treasure, as are all of your videos. Must keep spreading the word of what is essential in life. Thank you so much.

This is more than a place. It's a whole philosophy of such loving generous priorities. Blows me away. " No plan", just inventive accommodation for more family and more friends and more friends and more interests and more gatherings and wonderful places to gather. They just get it. Who wouldn't love being there for awhile or forever working on something wonderful. Well a lot of people! TG.

😅Love how he refers to things being civilized. Too cute. So much history and character here. It just keeps adding on little by little, bit by bit . 😊

1990 to 1992 I worked for Royal Mail Parcelforce, based in Aldershot and my main run was Godalming. I used to drive along the Hogs Back (A31) every morning towards Guildford, watching the scenery change throughout the seasons was stunning. you are up on a hill and at times the valley to my left would be shrouded by mist, the sunrise or sunsets amazing to see. I am absolutely certain I delivered to Wood Farm because I remember how difficult it was to find the first time I went, trying to find the route over the railway. No sat nav to help me back then! (Edit - I got my dates wrong! 92 to 94 I was at college in Reading, giving people in Godalming their parcels was my job 90 to 92.)

I get the most satisfying feeling of warmth and ease from Helga and Chris. Most people, myself included, seek control over their land and belongings and protect 'what's theirs' but on Wood Farm people are welcome to use the space and live there. It really is extraordinary. This vid made my day!

This is probably one of my if not my favorite video you two have made. I love this family. And he was the brains behind Swift. WOW!! I sure would love spending some time visiting here. Sounds like everyone is down to earth. My kind of people. They sold the mansion to live in a L shaped old WWII buildings. Just amazing. I noticed a a ginger jar shaped piece of Jade on one of the shelves. It's obvious he traveled a lot. I enjoyed this very much. I'll be watching it a least a few more times to see what I missed. ❤

K: Everytime I think you have plateaued , your familial "team" raises the bar with the quality of your productions. And yes, they truly are productions. You manage to gravitate toward and feature the most unique and interesting individuals that are willing to share their inspirations and their lives with you. Who wouldn't want to be around Chris and Helga? Their zest for life and desire to gather both family and friends; new and old is a wonderful thing to behold. I smiled when their golden retriever barked and then ran to pick up its baby to show and share with you. I was delighted when Chris pointed out the towering tree planted from seeds taken from the Muir woods. Kirsten, this was a short story that I didn't want to end. I can't thank you enough for your time and efforts to educate and enlighten us with your "finds". I wish continued health and happiness to Helga, Chris and their extended community of family and friends. How lucky they are to be a part of this Garden of Eden. 🇺🇸

What a marvelous home! Hypothetically, if I was offered a stately home or this jewel, I would take this house. It has so much charm, and the sun porch would be an ideal place to sit on a rainy day- out of doors, but still sheltered.

The fact that he casually dropped the fact he was part of the development swift shows how humble he is. So much work went into this house and it's beautiful.

We can learn a lot from this couple and the way they've chose to live their lives. Have many guest bedrooms, bunk rooms, lofts, small cottages, etc., so that many friends and family can stay and visit for many days at a time. This sociable type of lifestyle along with Helga's farm fresh foods can lead to a healthier longer life.
