This video is a commentary of mine on the spectacular reign of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I the Great (527-565) and more particularly on the rather unknown facts about his impressive life and reign. This video thus covers what in my opinion are top 10 unknown facts about Justinian the Great beginning with his humble origins and then to his pre-imperial career, long and eventful reign which saw many milestone moments in Byzantine history, and finally to his death and succession. Many of course would remember Justinian I for constructing the cathedral of the Hagia Sophia, commissioning his famous code of laws known as the "Corpus Juris Civilis", and his reconquests of North Africa and Italy from barbarians. However, there are many lesser known facts about Justinian such as his other construction projects, religious policy, other conquests, economic reforms, and surviving the plague of 542. In terms of ranking the top 10, in this video I am more or less doing it in chronological order and if anyone has thoughts or suggestions about this video or on Justinian please leave it in the comments. Additionally, this video too is a commentary on the new Justinian book by Peter Sarris which I recently finished reading.
