She was part of the Sidewalk cafe open mic scene in late 90's - early 00's NYC (which spawned the term "anti-folk", i think) w bands like the moldy peaches, Jeff Lewis, the yeah yeah yeahs, the strokes, and TV on the radio, along with so many others.
A documentary came out kinda recently called "meet me in the bathroom" which is all about that time and that scene. It's okay. The focus on certain bands and not others is off balance, some names/bands not even being mentioned. But it's def worth a watch if you're in to those bands.
