On this episode of How to Drink, I present the New York Sour or as it might have been known in the 1890's a Fancy Sour. There were "Fancy" variations of all kinds of drinks back then, the idea being to embellish a cocktail to its maximum limit and arrive at something you'd still actually want to drink. Party like it's 1899 with the New York Sour, a Whiskey Sour variation from the golden age of cocktails. Cheers!

Now, I should say the New York Sour is having something of a revitalization at the moment and has been turning up in fancy bars and cocktail blogs for a while now. I think you'll find most of the modern New York Sours omit the egg white and the Curaçao and simplify the drink to Whisky, lemon, sugar, and a wine float. I felt like presenting a more historically inclined version here. Omitting the egg white will yield a cleaner looking wine float, and if that's your preference go for it, but I love the texture of an egg white in a whiskey sour.

New York Sour Ingredients:
- 1oz. or 30 ml Lemon Juice
- .5oz or 15 ml Gum Syrup
- .25oz or 8 ml Curçao
- 1 Egg White
- 2oz or 60 ml Rye
- Dry Shake
- Add Ice, Shake Again
- Pour into Chilled Glass
- Add Float of Red Wine
- Garnish as you like

Watching this older video it's weird to see Greg make a drink without pouring half of it on his hands and bar.

I genuinely can never tell when you're wasted and when you're sober. I think this might be why you are the perfect host for this show.

To make your wine float you should put the bar spoon at the circunference of the glass and pour on top of it. Note you want to flip the spoon so you pour on top of the convex side and pour very slowly; furthermore make sure that the spoon is on the surface of the foam and not undeneat it. Another trick is to dilute some alcohol (whisky, vodka, rum) on your wine to lower the wine's density, this helps a lot layering the cocktails. Hope this helps

I just re-watched this.   "I've been talking enough."  - Greg, 12/Oct/2018. Two and a half years later we have 30 minute episodes of Gregs wonderful and wide-reaching ruminations. Big Love.

The return of the history lessons for the origins of this drink make me happy. Thanks for teaching me something new Greg!

Claret, coincidentally enough is what the English call, wait for it... Bordeaux! Greg, you stumble into genius every time buddy.

Didn't wake up this morning thinking I needed a New York Sour in my life, yet here we are.

My favorite thing about your channel—which I have been binge watching for the last two days—is that you don’t edit out (all of) your mistakes. It obviously still has a great production value, but leaving in the silly slip-ups makes it more fun to watch. It feels more like hanging out with a knowledgeable buddy than watching an instructional video. You seem like someone who knows how to embrace their flaws, and that is awesome!

$30,000?! Man you made the right call. I like to know not only how to drink but to know that this IS how to drink!

I tried this drink and it was amazing! If you pour the wine float over the back of the bar spoon it creates the separation and layer of red at the top of the drink.

"Claret isn't around much anymore" Ironically, 'claret' means the exact wine you used - a Bordeaux.

I'm a Jack-on-the-rocks kind of girl, so I appreciate this guy's lovely concoction. I've tried some more of his recipes, & so far, so good. I don't care for sweet drinks, but I have discovered some aren't so bad after all. Thanks so much.
