That first tracking shot you see Quentin Tarantino smiling and it looks like he's thinking Lawrence Tierney is nailing it as Joe. Apparently, Tierney was cantankerous and a pain-in-the-ass but Tarantino knew he was getting an old-school film noir icon, and Tierney is terrific in this film.
