I grew up in Minnesota and I noticed when I was young that sunlight could evaporate snow in temps below zero. I didn't know why at the time, but it sparked my interest in weather and eventually space weather.

60 years ago my mom hung the sheets out to dry, mid winter, Michigan. They would freeze solid. By mid afternoon the sheets were dry.

The Kansas tornado went right past my bug out location (between Fall River and Fredonia). I know we're supposed to get more today but I have to check for damage 😕

Just from my own experience Light vaporizing water without heat should have been obvious. Living in Canada, there are days when it's -40 celcius and you can see water vapour rising up from lakes without any heat.

The light and evaporation thing is not news. Everybody knew that. As somebody that lived in Wyoming, (I learned that in 4th grade by observation) understand that during winter snow sublimes rather than melts. Almost all of it occurs during the day. Microwaves are a great example of it also just that the energy transfer is better due to the wave lengths being more favorable for a particular type of vibration of the water molecule. Sorry but we covered this in engineering classes 45 years ago. We even chose how to prevent evaporation by factoring in the best combination of surface tension manipulation and surface covering. I get frustrated with " discoveries" that are just rebranding of known facts. It is a very common thing today because journals aren't what they used to be.
