Damn it man. I can't speak highly enough about your content. This is some of the best commentary on the horror genre I've ever heard on YouTube. I really don't even have much to add to this discussion because you've said it all and more in the video, I just want to help your engagement stats because you deserve as much.

Gremlins is also very self-aware and tongue in cheek. Not to the extent of the sequel, but Dante's fingerprints are all over it. Right at the opening parallels are drawn between its protagonist Billy Peltzer, and Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. It's a movie taking its place among classics, not just a sub-genre entry to be forgotten overnight.

The Gate was one of the very few horror movies that actually scared me, even as a kid. The false parents scene, and hte thing in the wall are just, BWUH... And the wild thing is, the sequel, while not great... is better than you might think it is! And unlike most budget horror dequels, is intimately tied with hte original.

Wow!! I never realized just how influential Gremlins was to the small creatures horror genre!! They have inspired so many homages!.i agree, it's time to bring back little monsters, to horror films. Speaking of Troll. That film scared me shitless, when I was 4 or 5, & begged my dad to rent it. I remember I got so terrified, that I then begged him to turn it off, which he did, lmao! I didn't even see the ending, until I was 21, lol!

Re: the forced perspective and the Ring in LOTR - one of my favorite uses of this effect is in Strangers On A Train, in which a murder is shown as it is reflected in the lens of a pair of glasses which the victim dropped on the ground. In fact the lens was about 4 feet across, in order for the reflection to properly capture the action.
Another is in Top Secret, in which the foreground telephone rings, and when a man comes to answer it, it turns out to just be a giant phone, where it had appeared regular size to an audience that assumes it's simply really close to camera.

Can we just talk about how slimy and gross looking monsters from the 80’s movies looked? Honestly I love it! It makes them feel so scary and disgusting that you’d want to avoid one at any cost, either out of fear that you’d get dirty or they’d eat you
