As a former 911 call taker, please just call the fire department if you smell gas. Turn off the appliance if you can, DO NOT open the doors and windows, and just get out of the house until they arrive. The fire department can come and check for gas leaks and carbon monoxide. If something needs fixing then the gas company will come out. The reason you shouldn't air out the house is because the fire department has an easier time determining the source of the issue. Just get out of the house and call them.

I think he brought your spark back. I think he made you feel alive again after years of being drained. So I think that served its purpose for that season, as you mentioned.
