In this video I talk about my views on the Caged System. A well known, but often discussed topic about how we can become a master of the fretboard. I know it's a long video. I could've done it in under ten minutes, but there are many 'buts' and 'ifs' to the story. This is my take on Caged, enjoy!

I read on the interwebz (so it's true) that you're not officially a YouTube channel if you haven't discussed the Caged System in a least one video... So here is my take. I really hope you enjoy it, I did my best to make it as clear as possible!

Ironic that a system named CAGED unlocks the fretboard! I love it!

I started adding your useful tutorials to my 'watch later' playlist so I can go back to them...but then I realised I had added at least twenty of them and I might as well save the whole channel! I can't thank you enough for your dedication, charm and wonderfully respectful personality. You've provided real happiness and positivity in my life and I can't thank you enough. I'm signing up to the patreon today as a small token of gratitude. Thanks Paul :)

Hi Paul, I've been playing guitar mostly self-taught for 35+ years and this is the first time I've ever seen or heard anyone explain this with any common sense, plain language and a sense of humility and humour. Thank you so much for sharing. Daniel

All CAGED is is the shape of the chord on each string where the root is: E - G shape A - C shape D - E shape G - A shape B - D shape It is important to know where each natural note lies on the fretboard. The chord will form around it depending on which string the root is found on. The scale or mode will flow around the root.

Hi Paul - really liked the way you explained this - especially by making some of the more difficult shapes more playable! You saying that guitar players don't play this chord like this but take this short cut ... was a huge help (and relief) - It made the whole chord shape system more accessible

I just found your channel and have been watching and player for 4 hours. I've improved my playing more in these hours than i have the last 6 months. You explain it in detail without dragging it out. Thank you so much, Paul. Keep it up.

What a help! Thank you! 5 years later and your video is still super helpful! I just recently pushed myself to get back serious about playing again. I only know a few basic chords, but a lot of theory. I've been involved in music for 11 years now. I found your channel recently and you have been a huge help!! This is the best explanation for this system I have seen. I have been so confused on how to use this system, but finally understand it and can put it into practice! Thanks Paul!

I had trouble understanding CAGED until I watched this, and you started with E. The same shape as all the barre chords I've been doing, without realizing it was part of the CAGED system. Only person I've seen start with E and make it seem simple. Thank you!

This is the first time I actually understand the CAGED system. I hope you keep making these theory videos; you seem to be the only person that explains it in a way I can understand.

Paul - I've been playing for over 40 years and have slowly become quite accomplished, but your explanation literally made me smile and chuckle out loud with joy as I knew 90% of this but never put it all together! Loved it! You are VERY good at explaining things, and in a fun way! Thank you kindly, wherever life finds you!
