Another in our new series of HD videos covering the military history of the United States and various conflicts over the centuries — with a spotlight on the Soldiers who fought for their country.

This installment illustrates and demonstrates the various elements of the United States Army “Casey’s Manual” for Infantry Soldiers - a manual of arms used primarily by the Union Army during the Civil War. The three-part tome was published by the War Department in 1862 as an update to an earlier manual written by William Hardee and now used widely by not only the Union Army but by Confederates as well. In 1862, Hardee was now a Confederate Major General.

This video is an ideal primer and guide for re-enactors on how to properly hold, carry and use the three-band musket during the American Civil War.

These men are drilling properly and their kit looks great. A fine video for new reenactors or chairborne history buffs.

I do civil was re-enactments and just became old enough to use a rifle. This was very helpful with learning the basic Manuel of arms.

Mostly Correct.. a little bit here and there different from Casey's Tactics. I also own a real 1863 US Regulations (with amendments up to June 23, 1863) and they have commands in there. Slight difference. The Amendments reflect for 1863 Reenactors since the little changes from 1862 Regs relate to most common soldier impressions (like Sky blue Pants, All Officers can wear Mounted Great Coats, Hash marks for service and other items). Pay tables and a wealth of information.

If the Union soldiers just place their left hand in the correct position during the first battle of Bull Run. The war could have been won on that fateful day.

Arms port? Since the preparatory command precedes the execution, should the command not be port, arms since arms is the execution command in all other positions?
