Hello Shiny Crafty People and welcome back to the channel!

Today I'm answering a question from my friend and YouTube Subscriber PAT DYE from Ohio who wanted to learn how to square up a quilt block.

I've met Pat in person cause she's the mother of a dear friend of mine and while I was there she showed me some of her really great quilt work. Pat is still an amateur, but she's super eager and she wanted to learn how to square up a quilt block so that her quilts will be flatter and more professional-looking.

So while I teach some of that in this video, I also want to say that PERFECT IS NOT REQUIRED! My quilts are never perfect, even though they may look pretty good from the other side of a computer or phone screen. I happen to believe that perfection is near impossible and should be reserved for machines.

Instead, let's aim for unique and comfortable. If big puckers and off-sized blocks are uncomfortable, then let's fix them. But a funky block and some no-so-straight lines that still make for a comfortable quilt are unique and deserve to be shared!

Anyway, I hope you like this short tutorial and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE send me your other questions. You can leave a question in the comments or you can join our Facebook group and answer them there!

Thank you!! I'm still so new to quilting and finding this finally made the light bulb go off for using all those square rulers I've invested in. I truly appreciate how well you explained squaring up.

I’m always surprised at the beginning quilters who are not taught to square up completed blocks. Also important is using the same ruler or same brand of rulers when squaring up (due to varying thickness of printed lines) Thank you for this video. Yeah, you crack us up too! 😍

This is great, however it leads me to my question. I do stuff with paper and have a straight ruler which I am always fussing with and still mess up. Recently I was gifted several rulers like you use and the person (also does paper work) swears by them. Enter problem, she does not live in the same state and therefore she is unable to teach me how to use these assorted rulers. I am hoping I am not the only one who would like to learn,. Might you be able to help out? Thank you and have a good weekend :)

Sir Timothy, I notice you do something that I have been told is a no no. When you use your rotary cutter, you hold it an angle against the edge of the ruler. Am I supposed to do that too?
