Join me as I talk my way through the Nintendo iceberg, with my own personal anecdotes, opinions, and theories behind the many strange and mysterious points this iceberg has to offer!
(by the way, I recorded the audio for this video while getting over being sick, so, sorry if my voice sounds a bit different!)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a small section I'm adding for missed facts, or things I got blatantly false, that I would like to add here for posterity. Comment if you feel something should be added to this list!

1. The Super Mario 64 "so long'a bowser" quote was originally removed from the "Shindou Pak Taiou" version. basically, a version of Super Mario 64 with rumble, and some fixed glitches/oddities, such as no longer being able to do backwards long jumping, a popular speedrunning technique.

2. the hell valley sky trees return in WarioWare Get it Together on the Switch, and with that, Nintendo officially acknowledging them.

3. Mario's stereotypical Italian accent provided by Charles Martinet, can be blamed in regards to many mishearing "so long'a bowser", sort of like how he says "it's'a me, mario!" I didn't think this was something that needed to be said, as it's a bit obvious how heavy Mario's accent is, but I get comments about it a lot so I'll include it.

4. In regards to Metroid's Justin Bailey password, samus having the pink leotard and green hair isn't a unique color pallet. it's the color that she changes to when she wears the Varia suit. that's it. the color is NOT special or something given to samus because of the password. when samus doesn't have the varia suit, but is wearing the leotard, she has reddish brown hair, and this switches to blonde when you switch weapons to missles. when you have the varia suit equipped, her hair simply changes shades of green. I always thought Justin Bailey was unique because the color samus takes, but no. its just special because it gives you everything, including the varia suit equipped right from the start, hence the green hair.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(I used so many songs in this video, it would be quite a task to name them all, so, if you're curious about any, just leave a comment and I'll do my best to get the song name for you!)

I am shocked that Lavender Town Syndrome is on level 3 - I feel like that’s one of the first rumors you learn when you start looking into video game rumors and stories.

Mario actually says "So long, eh Bowser?!". The reason the line is missing in the Switch version is because it's actually the japanese Shindou version, which added Rumble Pak support and the Peach voice over that was previously not in the original japanese version. The line "So long, eh Bowser?!" is missing from every japanese version and the reason is that, in Japan, Bowser is not named Bowser, but rather "Kuppa". So, having Mario randomly calling him Bowser in one of the voice lines would have just confused japanese players. Since the Switch version is the Shindou version on which a patch for textures and language is applied, it makes sense why the line cannot be heard there. Hope I was able to explain this well! EDIT: I didn't think this comment would be this popular! Thanks for the MANY people who reminded me he says King and not eh. I learned that a long time ago but for some reason, a memory of someone saying it was "Eh" left a bigger impression on me so I guess it took over my memories. Thanks for many replies though.

For the "Holding buttons to increase catch of pokemon" part, I've always alternated a and b while altwrnating the d-pad in counter-clockwise direction hahaha can't stop because it DEFINITELY works 😉😂

This shows the power of secrets in games. Putting something in the game that only 10% of players discover is something that is VERY powerful. Modern games should do it more.

The change in switch port is actually because of bowser’s new sexual identity. He used to be gay, but recently found out he was attracted to women, which mean he is actually bisexual. Mario, being an ally of the LGTBQ+ community, respected his new orientation, which is why when you throw him he says “Bye, Bi”.

I made this iceberg about a year and a half ago and I would like to personally apologize for the last 2 layers. layer 7 was the most obscure obviously fake stuff I could find and layer 8 was all made up besides the hq one. I'm glad you skimmed over them because I was sitting in fear the entire video thinking you were going to go in depth about "luigi in real life" lol. overall this was a very well put together video and pretty much everything said here was correct. "brothers in harms" refers to a video by GermanPeter titled "The LOST NES game that inspired TF2?", I do not blame you for not finding it

If I miss one thing about gaming back then was that there wasnt nearly as much sure sources of video game facts as today online and believing things like the ones he mentions in the videos and that also encourages videogame developers to place even more secret easter eggs and things that would create rumors and stories between gamers

The great thing about Mario 64 is everytime I play it I FEEL like I’m going to discover a new hidden level or some secret. I feel like something is right around the corner.

As a kid, I swore Mario said “so long, big bouncy”. Not sure why. Also as a kid in the early 2000s, i remember reading a rumor of the “light temple” in OoT. All I remember was that Sheik would teach a special song (that was recorded so you had to write it down), play it at a specific location then you’d be at the light temple

Not a correction, but an addition and fun fact The fact that the original Legend of Zelda's dungeon maps line up so perfectly is actually by design - it's how they were able to most efficiently fit the data on the cartridge. What's neat is the programmer realized he had made an error in determining how much data they had to work with and had only used half of the available space for the 9 dungeons, so they made some more and that's how the second quest came to be.

This is what I loved about the early days of gaming, rumors would circulate and you would find yourself exploring every nook just to unlock those illusive features lol.

Not even remotely exaggerating when I say this. This is easily one of the best iceberg videos out there. You went above and beyond, insanely good job

I love in depth Iceberg videos. Whenever I see one that’s under 20 or 30 minutes I just don’t watch them. I watch the longest ones. So great for doing homework or gaming. Love your videos man!

I was always under the impression Chris Houlihan was a Nintendo Power contest winner. My mind was blown to find out this person has never been confirmed to exist. I thought I remembered a pic of him in NP but honestly, the mind plays tricks when trying to remember something old. Hopefully this doesn't end up on some Mandela Effect video.

Missingno has to be my favorite glitch of all time in any game. I remember how amazing it felt to catch it and how it came with the epiphany that games are just programs. It blew my 12 year old brain to pieces.

I didn't see another comment about this, but Samus' "green hair palette" is just the palette she gets from the varia suit. Her brunette palette is her power suit.

Fun fact: Despite Stop ‘N’ Swop being scrapped for the N64, a use for it was found by the Paper Mario speedrunning community. By using a series of glitches in Ocarina of Time, it’s possible to store certain data in the expansion pack. This data is not cleared when starting up Paper Mario, so a series of glitches there allows you to execute the stored data, warping you to the end of the game. The whole speedrun takes less than half an hour.

I remember my friend had an "uncle" that played as shadow link, master hand, and created a black hole in smash bros melee. My friend group and I spent hours across several days trying to recreate it following the bad description the friend described to make it happen. We decided as a group our friend was a liar, like the mew under the truck. I was so surprised as an adult when i learned you can glitch the game to do all 3, lol, i guess he did have an uncle that showed him.

To me the "So long(ue) Bowser" line was caused because Mario was given a strong accent, not any kind of audio distortion.
