Inside a Covid I.C.U., Through a Nurse's Eyes | NYT Opinion

The short film above allows you to experience the brutality of the pandemic from the perspective of nurses inside a Covid-19 intensive care unit.

Opinion Video producer Alexander Stockton spent several days reporting at the Valleywise Medical Center in Phoenix. Two I.C.U. nurses wore cameras to show what itā€™s like to care for the sickest Covid patients a year into the pandemic.

So many Americans have died in hospitals without family by their side, but they were not alone. Nurses brush patientsā€™ teeth, change their catheters and hold their hands in their final moments.

In just a year, weā€™ve lost half a million Americans to Covid-19. Vaccinations may be offering some relief, but inside I.C.U.s, nurses continue to contend with the trauma and grief of Americaā€™s carousel of death.

COVID ICU nurse here, I block it out everyday but inside Iā€™m in the worst place Iā€™ve ever been in my whole life. Be kind. Please just be kind to us.

"I always hold their hand. I don't want somebody to die alone". That made me tear up. What a legend Sara is

I've gotta give massive props to the family for allowing their grandmother's last moments to be shown like this. It's so important that people really see what's going on, and to have the strength to let your loved one be a face for the victims is incredible. Sending lots of love and prayers their way.

The nurses did so much to maintain that womanā€™s dignity. Holding the priestā€™s call to her ear, holding her hand, etc. It was so touching.

Nurses and doctors are going to need a lot of therapy after this is over. I have two friends who are doctors and relatives who are nurses and they're all scared and tired.

I spent 3 weeks in a coma on a ventilator here in Melbourne Australia with covid. A further 4 weeks in rehab learning how to walk again. There are no sufficient words to describe the appreciation I have for the nurses, doctors, nurses, janitors, nurses, allied health workers and nurses who cared for me and helped bring me back to life. Incredible people.

ā€œLetā€™s say there is a day nurses donā€™t come to the hospital then WHY are you even opening?ā€ As a nurse myself, there is No Lie in that statement!

It's crazy to me that nurses (ICU especially) aren't given free therapy to cope with their job.

I was for two weeks in an ICU with Covid-19 in Berlin, Germany and can testify to how hard and selflessly these people work -- all of them; nurses, nurse assistants, cleaning crews, doctors, physical therapists, psychologists; all of them. It is amazing. I am very thankful to all of them for keeping me alive and as comfortable as possible in very difficult circumstances. Thank you for making this video.

I would love to see this through the eyes of a respiratory therapist. Weā€™re been overlooked tremendously throughout this entire pandemic but we manage the vents and devices that help to keep them breathing. Respiratory therapists and Nurses have ran this pandemic.

The school administrator lady who did everything she could to protect her and her family and yet still being the one suffering because of other selfish people will never sit right with me. The world is definitely unfair.

I am a nurse, and I personally want to say Thank you for making this documentary. The narrarator and producers truly grasped the true emotion and trauma that we went through during the covid crisis. This brought me to tears and sadly quickly reminded me of the emotional and physical stress we endured. Although I am not an ICU nurse, when I had to send my patients to the ICU due to respiratory decline, I knew that most would not come out alive and would rarely come back to our floor. This moment in time is something that has forever changed us.

This film made me get the vaccine. I just got it last night! Medical teams, including maintenance, are the best, may God bless them!

Honestly, programs like this NEED to be played constantly at regular TV. Unless you work on a hospital, people wonā€™t realize how important your time of life is.

I served 20 years in the Air Force and people say "Thank you for your service." But honestly it was really nothing compared to the service provided by these nurse heroes. Thank you all.

Just because I saw this video Iā€™m even more determined to become a nurse now. My heart breaks for the people whose lives have been lost , their families and the healthcare staff that are involved. Id like to be able to help out in the shortage.
