Twenty-seven was a rough year for me. It was the year that my spirit was almost entirely crushed. I was relieved when someone told me it was all a bit of a phase but hell if I still didn't have to make my way through it. Some people never grow out of it, others die at that age receiving poetic justice if nothing else. I am lucky to have indeed made it. For me, it was the year I found out more people than I was aware of make empty promises. My whole life up until that point everyone I knew, who are nowhere near being a part of my life now, would often say their door would always be open if I ever needed anything. I thought that being generous meant you would have help if the situation was ever reversed. I was very much mistaken. That was when most of my friends met their significant other. It was a lonely time. Even though some part of me knew that I would inevitably only have myself and God, I was young and didn't understand how bad it really is out there cold and alone on the streets of downtown. God had mercy on my naivety and now I am pretty comfortable but I still have nightmares about all the dangers I faced.

Her cats name was Kitty. Which was funny, because when the talico-cat strolled along the neighbourhood the kids would call her by her name. "Here, kitty kitty kitty" they would say, not knowing that it was actually her name. Kitty didn't care for the kids though. In fact, she was scared. She didn't like people. With one exception. The one she'd crawl into everyday. The one that massaged her endlessly. The one human she was home with. Her human. And she didn't just like that human either. She loved her. Loved her dearly with all her heart. Her human loved her too. That could be felt and seen. Anyone who entered the room and saw these two knew instantly. The bond they shared transcended species. They were more than just friends. Kitty could tell her human everything. And her human told her everything too. Sometimes laughing. Sometimes crying. Kitty knew well, that life hadn't always been easy for her human. Kitty was small but she still remembered the bright eyes of that girl that squeled in joy when she first saw her. There were two more humans living with her human at the time. But these humans weren't always nice. These older humans would scream and shout, kitty would go and hide with her human until the storm had passed. Her human looked different back then. Younger. Scared. Worried. But as the years passed her voice turned darker and her face more stern. And then, one day, her human packed her bags and left. And she took Kitty with her. It was an adventure. They moved into a tiny dark room and Kitty wasn't allowed to meow. Her human always told her to keep quiet. Kitty meowed anyway, especially when her human came home after a long day. Later they moved into a slightly bigger place that had two rooms. "One room for me, one room for you" her human had said. But both rooms belonged to Kitty. She was now allowed to meow and spend days sleeping on the window ledge in the sun, watching the cars outside pass by. There were men. A few that did not stick around long. And two that did. They were both nice at first. Kitty didn't know what happened. It was usually in the second or third year of them coming around. Something switched and their tone changed. They started to scare Kitty then. And her human changed too. She smiled less and her face started to grow young and full of worry. That is until Kitty reminded that her human could do anything. It took a bit of convincing, but finally, her human would chase him out. And when it happened again with the second man, Kitty helped and bit him on his way out. She could hear him say angry words that she didn't know the meaning too. But her human could and she laughed as she threw the door shut. And then she cried. And Kitty curled up in a bawl and stayed put. For she had to support her human. Kitty did a good job. Because after that, no more bad man entered their home. And peace spread, inside and out. Everything was finally calm and remained that way. But for the first time, it was Kitty that started to worry. Everytime she'd get up, she'd have to stretch a bit longer. Everytime she wanted to jump in her humans lap, it became a bit more difficult. Age was catching up to her. But it wasn't just her age, that worried her. Cats know. Cats know when it soon will be time. Would her human be okay? Who would be able to support her in the dark times? Who would share her joy in the bright times? I'm okay. Her human said out of the blue one day. And Kitty breathed a sigh of relief. Soon she'd be gone, but her human would be okay. And then the day came. Kitty could feel it. Her human maybe sensed it. She'd taken her to the vet, fed her her favorite snacks, but her weight was declining and Kitty was growing weaker. But this was a good day. Kitty was laying in her favorite spot by the window, watching thick droplets that came from the sky. It felt like evening but it hadn't been bright for long. Kitty loved those days because inside it was cozy and warm. As she peeked down, she saw something move by the garbage bins across the street. Her body may have been growing weaker but her eyes were still sharp as day. Because she saw something all too familiar. A little tail that looked much like hers, emerging between two black garbage. Except that tail was black and wet and - from the looks of it - much smaller than hers. Kitty was intrigued and watched. It didn't take long for a tiny black body to emerge. She couldn't here but she could see the shivers and the meows that no one heard. This was it. This was her. Meow. Kitty said, clawing against the window until her human finally noticed. "What is it, Kitty?" her human said and peeked down. Meow, Kitty said. Meow. Meow. Until finally her human saw her. "Oh my gosh!" her human said "It's a stray kitten!" If Kitty could have nodded, she would have, but she just stared at her human. "Should I go get her?" Kitty meowed twice and her human was out the door. Kitty watched, as her human approached the tiny shivering black ball with a blanket, ever so cautiously, softly, caring. Her human could pick her up in one go. Yes. This was her. She knew and didn't even need to meet her. Kitty layed her head down and closed her eyes. It was time. Seconds later the door burst open. "Look Kitty, I got her!" her human said excited "Should we call her Meow meow, because you called her?" But there was no familiar answer. Meow meow was the only cat present.
