Dark Souls on Switch: Complete Analysis + Xbox 360/PS4 Graphics Comparison!

Developer Virtuos crafts a unique port for Switch with its own pros and cons. At its basis, this is the original 360/PS3 version of the game with none of the visual embellishments seen in the PS4 remaster - besides the change to a dynamic 1080p while docked. However there's more to this version than first meets the eye, as Tom explains.

Update: Switch's GPU runs at 768MHz in docked mode - as opposed to the 968MHz mentioned here. This drops by 39% GPU power in its handheld state, to 307Mhz, which is correct in the analysis. Sorry for any confusion!

Playing this in front of an actual bonfire in the dark must be the most immersive experience ever. I will do that as soon as I can.

Calling it "Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition" would probably have tempered expectations appropriately in all honesty.

I actually prefer the lighting in the original vs the remastered on PS4. My biggest gripe is the button configuration. Please fix this by allowing full customization.

Nice video, Digital Foundry. Very informative as always. Not sure when exactly I'll get Dark Souls Remastered, but I'm looking forward to it.

I would have loved to play this on my Switch, and all the visuals minus the weird fire effects are great for the system. It’s just the audio. Something going through my TV speakers shouldn’t sound like my DS

Could you guys do Wolfenstein II Update 1.2 analysis next just like you did with Doom? There's lots of talk about a very noticeable resolution boost docked and steady performance undocked.....Is this accurate?

what a great analysis, really gotta call it “The review I’d want” for this release...as all the rest of the game content we already know, that is all I wanted to know and more

Would it be possible to get 2 on the Switch? I always felt 2 didnt really do a lot with shadow but idk how taxing those effects are on game design and all that.

Why did they reduce the sound quality? To save space?

I wonder what's up with the audio quality. It sounds as if it was re-recorded in a lower quality mic. I'd guess compression but that doesn't match the file size... it's not a deal breaker but hope it gets patched.

If im not mistaken, DS3 is 30FPS, so i dont mind DS1 being 30 fps. And to be able to fight bosses in the bus or breaks is a really nice plus. My real annoyance is the controls of A and B being reversed. It confuses me a lot for the reasons mentioned by DF.

I got this a few years back on PC and put in so much time on it. However I never beat it. I quit playing for a while and eventually they announced the Switch version so I decided to stop playing my PC version and wait for it on Switch. It's not perfect (and not 60fps) but it still runs great. Barely notice frame drops (although I know it happens slightly from time to time), and it looks just as good as my PC version did, without the goofy bad porting issues the original PC version had. I love it, and I'll be finishing this game finally on my Switch. :)

Something I have noticed in a lot of Switch games is that the system seems to always struggle with any sort of alpha effects close up on screen. Back when you guys covered Mario+Rabbids one of the few places it dropped frames was with some alpha effects. I've been playing World of Final Fantasy on Switch and throughout the entire game it was playing at a consistent 30fps, but in a specific cutscene with alpha effects up close it dropped frames. And here in Dark Souls the same issue persists. Are these effects really all that taxing? Some insight would be appreciated.

Glad to see this video, but why didn't we get a Wolfenstein switch 1.2 patch analysis? I saw a comparison video on YouTube, and the difference was actually pretty huge.
