Im muslim and I for one LOVE Frank Herbert's work. Because it's actually one of the only times i felt the west gave a genuine DAMN about our culture. And even Herbert himself said in interviews that he spent years researching, engrossing himself in arabic culture to learn everything he could and he had many arabic friends who guided him along his writing journey. That is something worth praising and protecting imo. If you understand the books, it's clear that the book is trying to tell a story that shows a possible fiction future for people who originated from arabic and muslim origins historically. infact this is LITERALLY the history of the fremin over the course of 40 thousand years: They're ultimately descended from Arabic peoples in and around the region of Egypt (they originally called themselves the Misr from the planet of Nilotic al-Orouba; this is Arabic for Egyptian and the area 8f the Nile and Arabia). They were originally the Zensunni Wanderers, who split from the Third Islamic Movement founded by Maometh, the so-called "Third Muhammed" whose followers went on to form the Maometh Saari, and ended up travelling from world to world, facing persecution and enslavement along the way. Their tradition gives 6 stops on the migration to Arrakis - Poritrin, Salusa Secundus whee they spent nine generations as slaves, Bela Tegeuse, Rossak, Thurgrod and Harmonthep. so i dont think Herbert is being racist here, he is simply imagining a future for a group of peoples that actually exist today on earth because thats what makes his books more believable as they are rooted in real history and our modern day. He doesn't just do this with the Fremin, its also done for every other house portrayed in the dune books; each of them can be traced back to a cultural, religious, or race origin on earth and aspectos of those 'anchient' groups' ancestry, language, religions, customs, and culture persist even 40,000 years later. what i think is more racist is the fact that the movies changed some of those aspects of the books like where the holy war is actually called by the arabic name Jihad in the books. they should have just kept it the way it was. Now that's my thought on the books, and as for the movies, i love them too. they change a lot of the books, yes. But they give us so much more in the means of a much needed and dire message especially considering what is happening to our muslim brothers and sisters in Palestine.

They use the term jihad in the film. And they haven't gotten to the home of the fremen yet. So maybe wait until they interact with the fremen before passing that kind of judgement.

Considering how the fremens religion is depicted in the books, I think you would have complained either way.

I'm Muslim. I disagree. I don't think there was any nefarious purpose on the side of the filmmakers. Unfortunately anything to do with Islam is so overloaded with sensitivities, that they probably had to walk a fine line. Imagine if the word Jihad was included overlapping a scene of death and destruction - wouldn't go down well either. They did the best they could in my opinion - and came up with one of the best sci-fi films I have ever seen.

Considering how faithful it stayed to the books compared to all the other adaptations, and how they showed the Fremen (an arabic inspired people) as borderline unstoppable warriors? I'd say they did a very good job, and you're just nitpicking.

It's definitely true, that Hollywood (or the "western world") doens't treat Islam fairly, it also seems harsh to state that the creators of the movie hate muslims and arabs, if you haven't actually seen the movie yet. In the trailer they did use the word crusade, where Herbert originally used jihad, but in the final release I believe instead they went with "holy war". And true also that for the a lot of "western world" the word jihad has a negative charge, since it was introduced to there in context of terrorism and without any other exposure to the word in any other context, that probably isn't going to change easily... And in that sense using it in this movie's context wouldn't have helped either, since it was used to refer to a coming horrible holy war, by Herbert in the book. Besides the word jihad, there are plenty of arabic words used still. I couldn't say if all other words used in the books were used or are going to be used in Part 2, since in this part there's only a limited amount of interaction with the fremen.

I think people need to understand the difference between canon and inspiration, Dune is BEYOND race to me personally, and is about questioning your leaders, rather that be a military, social, heck even religion, ITā€™S ALL ABOUT THE MOTIVES PEOPLEšŸ§šŸ§

Granted that book to screen translation is always difficult especially when it's a very dense work. I think it would benefit you to re read the book. I'm not inclined to think you have read it to begin with.

Racist? Okay, lets say that its racist. If it wasnt racist then it would have been cultural appropiation or something like that.

Dune used to have these medieval arabia-inspired concepts in the video games too, ever since the release of Dune 2000 and its sequel. It was developed by the same video game developer as the Tiberium and Red Alert universe. Both which had special place in my heart for more than 14 years ago. EDIT: It's of a "newbie" language nature to derive words from other languages to build it.

Okay, this is about Dune Part One, which finishes just after Paul's duel with Jamis. It is from this point where the Fremen and their Arabic inspired culture becomes more prominent.

I like this video, my only comment is that Jihad does NOT mean "Holy War" I dont even know where that definition came from, Jihad means Struggle or Strive. Example, when someone is doing their best to hustle for money, it is considered Jihad for money/bread/life etc. I just hate how the west link the word Jihad to terrorisms even though it has nothing to do with it directly.
