After nodding out of a what seemed to be a dream within a dream, Harry Mason wakes up on the rust metal grating floor of a strange dark room he's never seen before. Dazed and confused without the slightest clue as to what is going on, the only thing he knows is that he is conscious and awake in an unfamiliar nightmarish environment, and his daughter is missing. The walls of the room are decorated with dead rotting mummified corpses hanging from the ceiling. His ONLY source of light is the flashlight clipped to his jacket. When he points the light at the metal grating floor, he sees that he is standing in the middle of a massive circular, emblem of some kind, the same one he saw back at the elementary school. He remembers Dahlia telling him it was some sort of black magic symbol called "The Mark of Samael," and that it could not be continued to spread. With no options left, Harry proceeds toward the only way out, a rotting wooden door at the end of the room.
After stepping through the door and walking up some concrete steps, Harry is outside. It is pitch black and apparently raining. He can feel himself getting wet by all the falling droplets of water and he can hear the loud rumbling of thunder from the black abyss above him. He can sense that something is deeply wrong. The ground beneath his feet is not concrete, asphalt or earth as it should be. It is metal. He waves his flashlight arround to get a sense of his surroundings and sees that the ground is nothing be a sheet of rusty metal grating stretching as far as the eye can see, disappearing into the darkness of the night. He begins to cautiously walk, and notices that beyond the grating beneath him, there is nothing but an endless abyss of blackness. He continues to tread carefully as he searches for his daughter, hoping that the rusty metal grating doesn't give out beneath him.
As he continues walking, he begins to see the walls of the old dilapidated buildings near him, giving the area some kind of structure. After coming across some rusty metal street signs and passing a of couple old wrecked automobiles, it occurs to him that he is actually roaming the streets of Silent Hill, but in what seems to be some sort of dark alternate reality, or nightmarish version of the town where everything is decaying and covered in a thick layer of rust.
