Sources for John Mark

Some things about the life of the early disciples we are left to deduce from the writings of ancient authors. Although we cannot be absolutely certain about all of their facts, they are often the best we have and reasonable conclusions can be reached. Some of these writers were born some time after John Mark and rely on oral traditions or writings we no longer have. Sometimes this can be comfortably relied upon, indeed much of our own scriptures were originally passed on faithfully through oral accounts. Conclusions I reach through such sources I try to relate to historical matters of a persons life rather than matters of theology and therefore any mistakes I make are not overly consequential.

Ancient church fathers and writers that give us insight into John Mark include:

Papias of Hierapolis
Bishop of Hierapolis b 60AD

Dionysius of Alexandria
Born in the 3rd C. And an early Pope

Eusebius
Bishop of Ceaserea in 3rd C

Clement of Alexandria
Born 150. Christian theologian and philosopher in Alexandria - Pupils include Origen

Tertullian
Born 155. Christian apologist and author based in Carthage

Origen of Alexandria
Born 184. Christian scholar and apologist. Wrote more than 2000 papers defending the gospel.

I am a truck driver and because of my limited time I have limited resources except for when I can turn into sermons from my local Church from afar. I want to say THANK YOU so much and God bless you! I have specifically had some questions about Mark for a while now and you are answering all of them. I know you don't make videos often but I I'm a new subscriber after seeing this video and also seeing the rest in your library. I hope to see more and I wish the Lord to be by the side of you and yours.

I was so moved and blessed by your teaching about John Mark. I found myself in tears several times as you described his life and commitment to serving our Lord Jesus. I would love to know more about your resource for John Mark's life so I could do a in depth study for my Sunday School class. May God bless you Brian Rebettes

Thank You for this video, It gives the Gospel of Mark a new meaning. I wish we knew more about Mary from Magdala, what happened to her after our Lord went to be with the Father.

Thank you so much for explaining how Mark became a follower and church planter of Christ. I am a baby Christian and this is very helpful to me in my understandings. Can you please share with me where you are quoting from? I would love to read more about it. I’m so glad I came across your channel. Thank you again. All Glory to God!!! β€οΈπŸ™πŸ½

Thank you Brian for this excellent video. Hopefully later this year (2024) I will be writing several exegetical articles about John Mark of which I will be including into my first book. Could you share the source for John Mark and his mother Mary moving to Cana? I will be including some geography in my articles and it would be helpful for me to know where that reference is from. Thank you! Also, any comment on John Mark's short stature that you wanted to include?

I am thankful your dad was a Christian and led you to where you are today, as much as it is humanly possible. Of course the Holy Spirit was the primary leader but the HS works through people. Β  I enjoyed your teaching very much.

The way Marc's gospel is narrated looks like it was written by a young person. It is believed Marc wrote his account of the life of Jesus when he was still in his mid 20s. He was very rich and educated and could travel back to Jerusalem by himself , then Paul indicates in his letter that Marc had "written instructions" for them. This might have included his famous action gospel!
