History of the Sacred 28 (All PURE Blood Families) - Harry Potter Explained

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re discussing the Sacred Twenty-Eight. Let’s start with the most obvious question: What is The Sacred Twenty-Eight? Well, as you may already know, it’s actually more a question of WHO, rather than WHAT. Alright, so WHO exactly are they and how did they come to be?

Well, The Sacred Twenty-Eight is a “Pure-Blood Directory” of the wizarding world’s supposed most pure-blooded magical families – which is to say, the witches and wizards whose ancestors had not “muddied” their blood lines with Muggle integration. This extremely prejudiced list was released in the first half of the Twentieth Century, sometime in the early ‘30s. Although the author of the publication remained anonymous, it was widely rumoured to have been penned by Cantankerus Nott (with the Nott family, of course, making the list). However, whoever the author may have been, there is little doubt that the idea behind this despicable “directory” began with the intolerant ideologies of Salazar Slytherin, one of the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You see, Salazar was extremely open about his anti-Muggle sentiments, and, not only did The Sacred Twenty-Eight encourage the discrimination of Muggles, it also outlined the same wizarding families who Salazar himself had believed to be of pure magical blood.

The assertion that some wizarding families were more “pure” than others was met with mixed review by the wizarding community. Some openly rejected their inclusion in the directory, as they rightly knew that their relatives had married Muggles in the past, and they did not feel that this fact made them less than other magical families. However, sadly, many more wizarding families were upset at NOT being on the list.

So, who were these families that came to be known as The Sacred Twenty-Eight? Let me take you through each one, from A to Z.

Fun fact: By the end of the Harry Potter Saga about a third don't have any living heirs left to continue the bloodline. Voldemort indirectly caused most british pureblood lines to die out that served under him.

Ironic how Voldemort wanted only pure bloods in the wizarding world (even though he himself was a halfblood) and yet his actions (both directly and indirectly) led to the end of many pure blood families.

The Potters weren't included on the list because the surname was considered a very common muggle name. Not to mention Harry's great granddad Henry Potter was a very pro-muggle member of the Wizengamot and spoke out for muggle rights and wizard intervention into the muggle world. Though by all indications the Potters should have qualified as two men in the family took brides from the Black family and these unions weren't opposed by the awfully rigid Black family and their pureblood mania.

During Slytherin's time the anti-Muggle sentiments were completely justified since they were hellbent on killing witches and wizards. He was more like "Hey, you know those people currently trying to exterminate people like us? Yeah, let's not invite their children here."

Slight mistake, Ursula Flint (Black) was Sirius’s great, great grandmother. His mother was Walburga Black

I wish there were actual "real" official books like Hogwarts a History as opposed to non-official and unauthorized versions.

Neville's weakness with magic was due to the fact that for a long time he used his fathers wand to honour him. The wand chooses the wizard, not the other way around and as such his fathers wand didn't work as well with Neville as it did with his father causing him to seem magically weak

I want to see a movie of the first wizarding war and how Voldemort got these incredible abilities- that would be good

I would like to see a movie detailing Hagrid going to Hogwarts and watching his relationships with other students, especially Tom Riddle

YO, neville was not “somewhat incompetent” he was using his fathers wand for the first 5 years of his schooling, and even with that wand he did well in the DA. In potions, a class with “no foolish wand waving” he was ruthlessly bullied by Snape, when snape wasn’t around, he did fairly well, as shown by his OWL score.

Its interesting how the trio represented each wizarding category at the time Ron,Harry, Hermoine (pure blooded, half blooded and muggleborn)

Barty Crouch Jr. was not killed by the Dementor's Kiss. He had his soul sucked out, but he was still alive. What happened after that is not known, but it is directly stated by Lupin that the Kiss does not kill the victim.

Just to add to the note on the Black family, it's mentioned that only Sirius is not sorted into Slytherin. You can argue that Nymphadora Tonks is also on that lot as she is the daughter of Andromeda Black (sister of Narcisa and Bellatrix) Nymphadora was Draco Malfoy's cousin but was sorted into Hufflepuff and not Slytherin

I’ve always liked the fact that while some Purebloods were obviously horribly prejudiced towards Muggles, nobody seems to be at all racist in terms of skin colour, country of origin, etc

In the movie (I do not remember the book ending) Voldemort allow Longbottom to speak, even while laughing at him. It could be because Voldemort held reverence for his pure-blood lineage.

Random HP thought: how in the hell did Crabbe and Goyle pass any of their classes? How were they not held back in first year every year? How did they pass any OWL exams? Seriously, those guys' pilot lights were just about all the way out!

10:53 that’s really unfair to Neville, he was using his father’s wand and when it broke, he became almost as good as Harry with his magic. Meaning after OotP Neville is stronger than Hermione and Ron, so no he’s not incompetent he’s actually quite powerful.

One of my favourite parts about A Series of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) is that we get a sigil and motto for each house. Similarly to the House of Black, I would have liked for not just the Sacred Twenty-Eight, but also houses we're more familiar with, like the Potter and Weasley families, to have also gotten a family crest and motto.
