Families have been gathering at Leinster House to hear the State apology since earlier this morning.

Speaking ahead of the speech, they told Newstalk they hoped for a sincere and meaningful apology after more than 40 years of campaigning for justice.

In preparation for the speech last weekend, Simon Harris met with some of the relatives at his offices in Government Buildings.

It comes after the family’s 43-year fight for justice resulted last week in a verdict of unlawful killing at the inquests into their deaths.

The families gathered in the public gallery this afternoon, as the Toisaech listed off each and every person who died in the tragedy along with an anecdote for each one.

He went on to pay tribute to the thousands of other people who were impacted by the tragedy.

How many more State apologies must the citizens of Ireland endure before the political abuse of power is recognised?

Harris doesn't have the emotion to pull off such an important speech. He reads it line for line and fails to get across the true sense of the appalling miscarriage of justice lived each day by these families and that the state is truly sorry.

Too little too late, Butterly needs to pay back the compensation that was paid to him plus make his way to jail.

It's disgraceful parent's gone to their graves thinking their children's death's never got the justice they deserved. Putting families through so much heartache for 43 year's,, it's a lot too late ... I hope the families are happier with this outcome 43 year's later 😢😡

An admission of guilt 40+ years after the event, not offered graciously but rather brought forth from the resolve and the 40+ years of misery and tears of the families involved. Misery and tears inflicted by successive governments, including the sitting government, that brought as much pain and sorrow to these families as the events that unfolded on that tragic night.

Forty years to forcefully admit shortcomings and failures with a lack of any real sympathy, we've a while to wait for an apology for the current state of things. Why does Simon sound like he's reading a children's book on RTE Jr? 🤷‍♂️

You can see the sincerity When the Taoiseach has to read from a hymn sheet

should have been done 40 plus years ago and obviously still could not have been enough. Im afraid reading from a script like an actor does not do it for me. It seems like this show only went on because they had to. I know the current motley crew are not really accountable for that so it can never excuse the state whaich has done much damage over the years.
