I think if one is not born spire noble and isn't selected for becoming an astartes, I would think the best option is to become some form of a naval officer. You're important enough to be extracted from most situations, but not so important that you are swamped with responsibilities or seen as political competition. You live on a starship with relatively decent quarters, while stopping on various worlds goods and bad for resupply.

I once ran a game of Dark Heresy where the players were trapped on a Quarantine World. Long story short, the future acolytes discovered why. There was a child born with blonde hair and angelic wings on the otherwise mundane planet and the Quarantine was put in place to make sure NO ONE found out. Imagine my players' surprise when an Inquisitor showed up when they found out and said 'Hi there! You're really good at investigation! Would you like a job or a tomb?'

I'm all about that Warhammer 40,000k! What might humanity be like in the time the Necrons have been around, if we somehow survive that is? Maybe all the races merge into one civilization perhaps, or even one single species. And then that species goes out and spreads across the universe creating newer and weirder variants of the Milky Way amalgam species. I think the emperor gets a nercodermis body made from blackstone to control his godly warp essence. Maybe he even absorbes the power of the void dragon so his power can effect both the physical and immaterial universe. He can be the God he was meant to be without destroying the galaxy in the process, which is also beneficial to the Necrons ultimate goals.

I think we can all agree that the whole point of 40k lore is to make living in Nottingham seem less awful.
