I don't believe the excuse given. If the push to pass is not normally available then the drivers wouldn't have been pressing the button. The fact they were pressing it means that they knew their team had made it available.

I wonder if Penske thought they could get by without anyone noticing until the hybrid engine is rolled out later in the season. Itās slimy behavior, and Iām glad INDYCAR brought the hammer down in response.

Indycar now has it's own Talladega Nights moment where the 1st and 2nd place drivers (Newgarden and McLaughlin) were disqualified at St Pete, it happened in NASCAR at the 2022 Pocono Cup Series race where Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch were DQ'd from 1st and 2nd for illegal front bumpers. The same thing happened in F1 at the 1982 Brazilian GP where 1st place Nelson Piquet and 2nd place Keke Rosberg were disqualified for illegal water tanks.
