Self taught guide: 1. Don't use those Piano tutorials that have you play individual notes by themsleves to play a song. It's better if you develop the skill of sight reading and find the sheet music with chords. 2. Practice learning by ear often but don't disregard sheet music. Chords will be your best friend. 3. Once you're at least decent at sight reading, attempt to play simple songs like Mary had a little Lamb with a metronome. This will help keep you on beat and later you'll be playing harder songs on beat. 4. Posture is really important. A lot of self taught pianists look really tense when they play piano. Relax, calm down. You want your body to be loose. 5. During my highschool performances, I noticed other performers used one finger to play multiple notes. If possible, try to use your fingers intelligently. Even if that means slowly gliding your hand towards the notes you wanna play to use certain fingers. This will not be the case for every song. Sometimes you will have to do that. I guess what I'm trying to say is use your hands intelligently. As if they had purpose in being where they are. 6. While you practice you don't have to run through the whole song, and restart wherever you mess up. Break the song into parts and practice with one hand. For example, of a song required you to change patterns a lot on the right side of the piano. Practice that side, and focus on accuracy. For the moment, forget about beats. Just get the fingering down. Then once you feel confident move on to the left hand. Then after that, play the whole song, even if its off beat, just to see if you have it down. Then you can play on beat later. 7. You can train your ear by playing a note an attempting to sing it. You could also play a note, have someone quiz you and ask "what note was that" to train. But attempting to learn songs by ear, just going out of your way to actually seek knowledge is probably the fastest method. This still will take time to develop, and sometimes it won't. Theres a lot of people born with good pitch and it's never fully realized until they actually attempt to learn music. 8. Self taught pianists are hardly professional. That doesn't mean it's impossible. Maybe somewhere out there, someone talented like that exists. If theres not anything preventing you from taking lessons. Please take lessons.
