Contrary to popular belief, I feel this song is about his relationship with smoking weed and the lack thereof. Smoking being a part of his identity, and the creative process. Having to change how habitual it is because of all the moving parts in a band / the music industry. The hat is just an allegory. Kids don't take literature classes anymore, wtf? There's no way someone could write a song about a fucking hat this compelling unless there was a deeper meaning behind it. I could be wrong, but I'm not. lol
