Itās all about how Lou Reed plays with space between the licks of the second guitar, background chatter and occasional laughter makes you seem like youāre there with him (see the 1:59 mark especially, where thereās a loud commotion following Lou Reedās āWhen the blood cominā down his neckā). It contains one of Lou Reedās most passionate verbal deliveries, machine gunning (āI n-n-n-n-need now, now some kicksā) his way through lines as the song gets faster (or at least seems to).Ā

Coney Island baby, probably the 2nd best LP from Lou Reed (Berlin is definitely the best in my book). Kicks, along with Heroin is definitely the most defining song of Lou Reedās life style and philosophy. Among my favorites, the songs from the 1969 Velvet Underground double live LP, especially Sweet Jane, which gets its apex in the 1973 album Rockān Roll Animals, the combo intro-sweet Jane, one of the greatest live moments in modern music. What a blessing having been a teenager in these times.

The title track is one of the best songs in my catalogue.
