Itā€™s all about how Lou Reed plays with space between the licks of the second guitar, background chatter and occasional laughter makes you seem like youā€™re there with him (see the 1:59 mark especially, where thereā€™s a loud commotion following Lou Reedā€™s ā€œWhen the blood cominā€™ down his neckā€). It contains one of Lou Reedā€™s most passionate verbal deliveries, machine gunning (ā€œI n-n-n-n-need now, now some kicksā€) his way through lines as the song gets faster (or at least seems to).Ā  ā€“marsbars Oct 27 2013

I bought this album in about 1985. This was always my favourite track. Itā€™s so ODD. Along with TVU The Gift.....perfect.

The genius of Lou Reed: Only 2 chords and barely singing, yet a fucking masterpiece.

Coney Island baby, probably the 2nd best LP from Lou Reed (Berlin is definitely the best in my book). Kicks, along with Heroin is definitely the most defining song of Lou Reedā€™s life style and philosophy. Among my favorites, the songs from the 1969 Velvet Underground double live LP, especially Sweet Jane, which gets its apex in the 1973 album Rockā€™n Roll Animals, the combo intro-sweet Jane, one of the greatest live moments in modern music. What a blessing having been a teenager in these times.
