TRAILER | Fluid: Life Beyond the Binary | Non-binary comedian Mae Martin explores the science of gender — including its flawed history — and sexual fluidity in humans, other animals and plants.

From The Nature of Things, TV's longest-running science series. Coming to CBC and CBC Gem on March 28, 2024.

Hosted by the award-winning non-binary comedian Mae Martin, Fluid explores the little-known science of gender and sexual fluidity in the natural world.

The film debunks dangerous pseudo-scientific myths and introduces cutting-edge research to reveal that in a very real and measurable sense, we are all gender fluid.

Guided by eminent biologists Joan Roughgarden and Justin Rhodes and famed primatologist Frans de Waal, Mae discovers a hermaphroditic ginger plant, sex-changing clownfish and kobudai, and mammals - lions, hyenas and chimpanzees - that display surprisingly non-normative sexual traits.

In the realm of human research, Mae meets with trans historian Jules Gill-Peterson to explore the misguided but unfortunately still influential gender studies of the 1970s and 80s. Then Mae delves into the current gender controversies, seeking out the best and most up-to-date answers from brilliant researchers including child psychologist Kristina Olson, prominent neuroscientists Gillian Einstein and Lise Eliot, and three young trans/non-binary scientists - Daniel Pfau, Elle Lett and Simone Sun - who take on the challenges of gender research from a gender non-conforming perspective.

Mae also meets a group of trans youth who candidly reveal their difficult life experiences and hopes for a future that is more inclusive and accepting. Along the way, Mae shares reflections through relevant and hilarious material from their live standup performances.

Curious to see how do you determine the authenticity of a persons identity choice. Our society and laws is not structured for this. Sure you can stick a sign in the washroom to say all inclusive. But what about in athletic competitions? Prison ? Sauna ? War? This movement aims to create peace, but the result is our society is more polarized than ever,

I'm right handed...all my life. A left handed person reading a book about left handed people ain't gonna make me left handed. Don't be afraid to listen.

I watched the full documnetary and they keep talking about the evidence, so much evidence and consensus on evidence but there was zero evidence given. It's just peoples' beliefs.

I’m sorry this seems to me be more diverse than gender identity. We metal heads have been persecuted and goths and emos. We have been gender benders. I couldn’t wear makeup at school or wear a dress. It’s the early diagnosis that scares me

So the animal examples are bizarre. They change sex if the female does. That’s not what’s happening with humans. And children should not be allowed to transition before puberty. I liked drag questioned my sexuality. Now im glad I didn’t have parents who may have nurtured or convinced me to change. I’m straight love wearing dress and love my wife.

A recent investigative report by Radio-Canada’s program Enquête highlights just how quickly service providers in the healthcare system are willing to affirm gender identity. Nine minutes, that’s how long it took for 14-year-old Sacha, without parental involvement, to receive a prescription from a general practitioner for cross-sex hormones: 30 mg of testosterone to be injected once a week. This was the first appointment to a clinic in Quebec, no referral was required. Without prompting from the 14 year old patient, the appointment included a discussion regarding surgery, a double mastectomy, which in Quebec, is possible from the age of 16. As also noted in the investigation, before 2017, no minor underwent a mastectomy in Quebec. Last year there were 18. The Radio-Canada report is recorded - it is alarming, yet the Canadian Medical Association has remained silent? Here is the report: "Medical gender transition among minors: is Quebec moving too fast?"

i hope this reaches the right people. transphobia is a phobia for a reason. the best way to beat fear is information on that fear.
