Pharrell Williams hosts a masterclass for music students at The Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts as part of his 50TH ANNIVERSARY Artist-In-Residency. Joined by Dean Allyson Dean and Professors Bob Power and Jason King, Pharrell listens to students’ projects, offers constructive criticism, and discusses the nature of the creative process. Pharrell also invited high school kids from the Future Music Moguls, a free high school program at Clive Davis Institute, to observe the masterclass.

Maggie completely changed the flow of this seminar. After her performance, Pharrel finally opened up. You can tell he was speechless.

Whoever that teacher is; that guy is the real rockstar. The silent rock who selflessly nurtures all that talent.

The way she is genuinely surprised breaks me up man. She just made something from the heart, not thinking about being big or anything. She just did what she liked, no pretenses. Amazing

What’s in Pharrell’s head as he hears Maggie Rogers’ “Alaska”. 20:49 – That voice came from you? 20:53 – Not bad… 21:00 – Yeah, this is a thing. 21:11 – Right in the feels (he’s holding back a tear here). 21:21 – You dun right, teach. 21:25 – Wait, what?!? It gets better? 21:28 – OK, seriously. WTF. 21:33 – Don’t cry in front of the kids… Don’t cry in front of the kids. 21:41 – DROP OUTTA NOWHERE! 21:54 – Ok, just gonna jam a little bit here. This is some wicked s#!t here, you know that right? 21:56 – Maggie chuckles. She knows. 22:01 – Aight. Round 2. Gotta enjoy this… 22:07 – Just a little knee bounce. Keep it chill. 22:14 – S#!t’s crazy, man. 22:19 – Teach, you know this is legit, right? 22:22 – “Crazy.” 22:32 – Fine. It’s good. It’s great. It’s amazing. Just a little head bob. NBD. 22:45 – Oh, there’s words here? And they’re good? It’s a story? Wut. 22:54 – Ears open, brain’s flyin’ around. Should I wait a year to work with her, or ask after class? 23:03 – I’m thinking Grammys, not sure what my legs are doing. 23:23 – Counting stacks. 23:39 – It took me until I was 35 before I started doing stuff like this… 23:40 – “Wow.”

I feel like the others lack experience not in music but in life. You can tell that Maggie had a spiritual awakening in her music which then sparked her creativity. That’s the difference. Sometimes you got to put down the paper and pin, instruments, and go soul searching. Great song Maggie Rogers

I love how Maggie head bobs to her music with such confidence that I didn't really see with the first three musicians. I love when Pharrell hears Maggie''s voice and his eyebrows lift and he cannot hide the emotion he's feeling. Special moment.

I loved Maggie’s face when Pharrel just said “I have zero notes for that”. She looked so shocked hahaha. Love this girl so much.

For those who didn't know, Bob Power (the teacher) was the engineer that Tip picked for the Low End Theory mixing work, Pharrell said before that the Low End Theory was the album that inspire him to start making music, so yeah, Bob is a pretty important piece.

Make no mistake, the first three artists are very solid. Maggie is just on another level, but it's not the kind you get to by just working harder or even talent, in my opinion. She went through a lot of soul searching and a variety of experiences before hitting on that sound (and that song), which appears to have happened very organically. There's a great episode of the podcast "Song Exploder" in which she talks about it. - One other thing that I might mention that's worth noticing is that the first three artists all talked about what they wanted to represent to the world, whereas Maggie talked about personal experience, spirituality, and music. Her song was expressing something deep and real. While the others likely were attempting to do the same, the focus on where it comes from makes all of the difference.
