I've been working on portrait painting in my spare time for the past few months, and I like listening to calm music when I paint. Lately, it has mostly been lofi hiphop playlists and movie soundtracks. I was having an off day recently and decided I would make a song to distract myself. I gave myself 24 hours to complete it, which is a trick I use if I don't want to overthink things. The music I've been listening to while painting was an obvious influence.

For the video, I played the instrumental of the track on loop and painted a portrait. Rather than worry about the subject matter matching the lyrics, I wanted to see if I could get the mood across in the facial expression. I got it pretty close, I think.

And all of these singles are a part of my monthly mailing list where I share all kinds of art and music. It's called "The Hidden Hollow", so sign up if any of that sounds interesting. Here's the link: eepurl.com/hb4lwf

Lyrics:

In a search for the words I filled page after page
Still not sure what to say

The knot in my chest is not in my chest
It's just a trick of the brain

Could you share a little piece of your sunlight?
Or carry me off in the cold night?
I don't really care where I land
Could you teach me how to walk in the moonlight?
Or show me how to bury these old knives?
I'd like to get them out of my hands

So I'm back at the start to try my new hand
This all looks the same

But now I'm further along; I'm not at the start
Another trick of the brain

Could you share a little piece of your sunlight?
Or carry me off in the cold night?
I don't really care where I land
Could you teach me how to walk in the moonlight?
Or show me how to bury these old knives?
I'd like to get them out of my hands

You're the reason I started making my own music instead of just sticking to covers, I adore you and all that you do. Thank you Ben

This right here makes me want to spend a whole day making homemade iced tea, sit in a rocking chair on a wooden porch, and just reminisce

This is one of the best songs ever written. I believe Ben Cooper is one of the greatest songwriters in both words and music. Thank you.

I listened to this song for the first time yesterday and i've just been replaying it over and over about 20 times and I can't remember the last time a song made me feel this way. Thank you so much Ben

After all those albums of old'en style intruments, it's really nice to hear you branch out again with some more modern sounds that still manage to catch that same homely feel that your music always has, especially from different angels like this.

Thank you for your music, always. It doesn't silence the noise or stop it altogether, rather, it simply sits beside it, listens to the voices repeatedly recite helplessly the mess in my head, just ever so present amid and on top of the noise. That makes it perfectly comforting for me in a certain way. I believe I needed that. p.s. the art is incredible.

I am Korean. I think it's a song that tells everyone's life. It seems to be a really special and unknown song. It is an honor to know the songs of Radical Face. Thank you for letting me know Radical Face. It's so hard to understand when you look at the lyrics and videos. It's also fun to interpret.

Your ability to capture subtle emotion both in the painting and the song is ethereal.
