You know, Death probably knew that he would be destroyed by his son. After all he can sense the end of things (like with Simon). So this was probably him trying to have one last good memory with his son before the end.

I didn't realize Death's VA passed away, I knew Miguel Ferrer passed away, but didn't realize he voiced Death until I looked it up recently.
Honestly, I respect that they made him silent as a sign of respect for him. That fact alone changes the scene up a lot and shows it in a different light for the character.

See, Death is all zen and calm and tries to teach his son patience. His son is an angry dude who does not focus and attacks his dad. When Death dies he turns into a beautiful tree. When Death's son dies he turns into a bunch of tumbleweeds later. It's also why he was unable to access the 50th Dead World: he does not care to understand inner peace.

Seeing Death hug his son during his outburst just shows how understanding and patient he was. You know Death wouldn’t have given up on him, he hoped this was just teenage rebellion. This is really cool, Not only does New Death's design look awesome (reflecting his father's humanoid form and his mother Life's serpentine form) but when you realize that the friend he's talking about is the Lich it shows how different his opinion on the duty of Death is in the universe. Death is purpose and order, and equalizer in the balance of the universe like a Zen Garden, while the Lich is pure destruction and despair without rhyme or reason, like a nucular holocost.

Death could’ve easily defeated his son, but instead chose to hug him and show one last moment of love. He knew his own death was coming. At least this way, he was free from the endless responsibility and was reborn as a tree, tied to Life for eternity.

Holy hell, I just realized the context of this scene. Initially, I thought Death was the one whispering to his son in order to goad New Death into biting him in order to learn responsibility via taking over his role, but after noticing the Lich's hand in the background and Ron Perlman's voice, it's clear that the Lich manipulated New Death into killing his father.
Also realized the reason Death didn't speak was because his VA passed away four years ago. RIP

I just now realized that Death turned into a living organism (tree) when his son bit him because New Death is part-Life it cancels out Death's well,, deadness?. Yet New death himself turned into tumbleweeds because it is somehow both alive but dead at the same time.
