Lyrics:
He's going the distance
He's going for speed
She's all alone (All alone)
All alone in her time of need
Because he's racing and pacing and plotting the course
He's fighting and biting and riding on his horse
He's going the distance

I LOVE the part when he singsā€¦heā€™s going for speedā€¦and it is slightly off beat. It sounds so cool.

Growing up its a song about racing. When you're grown up, its a song about endurance

I've always liked John McCrea's delivery. He's half singing, half spoken word, kind of like Lou Reed.

Much as I dislike the wife Iā€™m divorcing, I'll be forever grateful to her for introducing me to this great band!

Legend has it that he's still racing and pacing and plotting the course.

"Bowel shaking earthquakes of doubt and remorse Assail him, impale him with monster truck force" - one of the greatest lyrics of all time.

This song has the most legendary bassline in my opinion. When the chorus baseline hits, it just gives me chills.

Of all the songs with a melodica, deadpan vocals, and mariachi style trumpet flourishes, this has to be in the top five of all time.

Profound. "The Distance" is a song by American alternative rock band Cake. Released in August 1996, "The Distance" was the first single from the band's second album, Fashion Nugget, and is considered one of their most popular songs.[4] It was written by the band's guitarist at the time, Greg Brown. "It is a song about success and failure, and failure of success, really," said McCrea in 2019. "It's a sad song, because there is no success. You can explode into the world with great magnificence, and still feel like the guy underneath the Mickey Mouse head, with the fan batteries that have stopped working properly, and it's dark under there, and everybody wants your autograph."[5] IMHO it's dark because you still haven't found your purpose and still on the hamster wheel running as fast as you possibly can but getting no where.
