In my mom’s very last days, she requested that she be cremated and that her ashes be spread in the ocean near Hawaii, her very favorite place. This past March, at the one year anniversary of her passing, my family and I made it to Hawaii to honor her wishes. “Bright Sadness” is about that experience, which was both heartbreaking and healing. The first thing you hear in this song is my Mom’s voice, as she was filming a family video of the very same spot of the ocean where we held her ceremony. She describes the beauty of the landscape perfectly: “this has got to be the closest thing to Heaven.”

BRIGHT SADNESS

(this is such a beautiful place, this has got to be the closest thing to Heaven)

a bright sunrise through shattered glass,
a fountain of youth slipping through the cracks.
i drag my feet through perfect sand
toward a future i no longer understand.
but my daughters’ collection of broken shells
teach me: i can still learn lessons if i let myself.

“i’ll be alright, i’ll be alright, i’ll be alright”
it’s been a year at the mercy of a merciless tide.
but now we’re here, clothes barely dry,
we return to the ocean one more time
for you.

in the water
we pay attention
to one another.
in the water
we remember
that nothing, even death,
lasts forever.

i want to swim, i want to swim, i want to try
to trust in the mercy of the merciless tide.
my mother taught me all will be reconciled,
God, what a gift to be my mother’s child.

i want to swim, i want to swim and close my eyes
be swept up in the mercy of the merciful tide,
my mother believed i will be reconciled.
God, what a gift to be my mother’s child.

in the water
we remember
that nothing, even death,
lasts forever

Thank you for making cry of happiness. This video brought back old memories I thought I forgot. I still remember going to France with my aunt and cousins, and we'd play around the beach for hours. She'd always have a smile on her face and was very kind, despite sometimes we'd misbehave. But she always spoke so softly and understandably. RIP Aunt Claire. ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

Desde el principio es una hermosa canción, se siente tan cálida. Lamento tu perdida, pero en definitiva tu madre estaría tan orgullosa de ti Ryan. Tu música preciosa siempre es un lugar seguro.

What a lovely song of gratitude and testimony of your mother's beautiful character she shared to grow on with you! I hear your peaceful sorrow gilded with hope and happiness, and I'm so sorry for her parting. May you, every day, gain more joy than sadness in Jesus's name. Peace.

I'm one of your top listeners on Spotify, I think last year I was in the top 0.01% of listeners, as having synesthesia means that your songs uniquely speak to me in a way I can't describe and nothing else compares, and I actively use them for healing in many parts of my life. My mum passed away very unexpectedly and very young when I was 11. The trauma of that day, having to do CPR on my mum for 45 minutes until an ambulance came, of knowing she had passed on long before it was confirmed haunts me still 12 years later. I recently returned to her grave with my brother, now that we're adults and can freely visit it, I'm disabled and I had to fly up for the experience so it was incredibly taxing but so beautifully worth it to see her again. This song brings me so, so much peace. Thank you so, so much. God, what a gift it is to be my mother's child.
