Atlas Goes Hands On
 60 FPS video
2,107,779 Views • Oct 30, 2024 • Click to toggle off description
Atlas is autonomously moving engine covers between supplier containers and a mobile sequencing dolly. The robot receives as input a list of bin locations to move parts between.

Atlas uses a machine learning (ML) vision model to detect and localize the environment fixtures and individual bins [0:36]. The robot uses a specialized grasping policy and continuously estimates the state of manipulated objects to achieve the task.

There are no prescribed or teleoperated movements; all motions are generated autonomously online. The robot is able to detect and react to changes in the environment (e.g., moving fixtures) and action failures (e.g., failure to insert the cover, tripping, environment collisions [1:24]) using a combination of vision, force, and proprioceptive sensors.

Even after all these years I still appreciate how Boston Dynamics actually lets the audience hear the noisy sounds in the background when it comes to videos of functionality of their device. Doing this along with releasing videos of the robots failing makes their videos more authentic than that of companies that hide everything behind cringe music and stating that their products are capable of doing attention gathering things with no real proof to show for it. Good job, Boston Dynamics. Keep at it!

Absoultely love how you discarded the human way of moving about - It just swivels its head and goes where it needs to go, be it sideways, backwards or whatever is most efficient.

love that you allowed it to demonstrate its ability to correct for errors like that

I love that it got spooked, emotionally recovered and went about its task. Same buddy....same...

Imagine this thing is walking away from you and you yell "Stupid robot!". Then it stops in its place and its head and torso swings around 180 degrees. "What did you say?"

I appreciate you showing it making a mistake and correcting for it. That's honestly more impressive than it being completely perfect.

Beyond the impressive feats of movement and precision, i really like seeing details like components stuck to the robot's body with kapton tape. Shows that this is much more of a genuine engineering project with real thought behind it than, say, the world's slowest bartender

Other Bots: learning walking.
Atlas: has already 9 to 5 job.

Heck yes, look at that range of motion! This is what hydraulic Atlas could never even dream of!

The fact that you guys learned that it can look human but doesn’t have to move like a human is so obvious but also so smart.

Love how authentic the videos are. It is the less is more approach to editing and making it “marketing”. Fantastic progress, and showing it correct for errors and move about. Crazy to think this is the worst it will ever be. Kudos to the team. We’re all cooked lol.

This is my favourite kind of humanoid robot. Not trying to look like a human, not triggering that "uncanny" feeling, just humanoid for the sake of efficiency.

1:21 action failure is really quite something amazing. This means that Atlas can work in "normal" work environments where misshapen containers, dented trucks, uneven surfaces can all be navigated and adapted to. I am very impressed that this was considered, the amount of thought and work that must have gone into this is impressive!

Wow, Atlas has really changed over the years! I love the way he swivels his body going back and forth, it looks so cool! Excellent job BD!

The 'leg reverse' creeps me out and amazes me! I just love all that, 'efficient movement'.

I love its movements they fully utilize the fact it isn't limited by human anatomical shortcomings such as a spinal column, he can just rotate his head and torso, I like that it can also sort of lean over and grab something some bots have to align themselves perfectly to grab something..this one is very fluid in its movements, even pauses a second to assess its spatial positioning and what is in its hands, a really nifty little robot

I love how he turns around & struts. My dude is just like "How's that fancy ganic cartilage treating you humans?" Sips Lipton iced coolant
