Inspired by the incredible true story of composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. The illegitimate son of an African slave and a French plantation owner, Bologne (Kelvin Harrison Jr. in a tour de force performance) rises to improbable heights in French society as a celebrated violinist-composer and fencer, complete with an ill-fated love affair and a falling out with Marie Antoinette (Lucy Boynton) and her court.

Cast: Kelvin Harrison Jr., Samara Weaving, Lucy Boynton, Marton Csokas, Alex Fitzalan, Minnie Driver

This scene works well because it introduces our protagonist with a popular frame of reference. Everyone knows Mozart, but very few know LeChavelier. Mozart was child prodigy and among the upper echelon of composers. LeChavelier impresses Mozart, if not outplays him on the violin. Tells us the audience, how good LeChavelier was.

I Love his facial expressions. He's saying, "Is there no one else?"! (The Mediocrity is becoming redundant)

Both excellent actors - but it's pretty clear who actually knows how to play. Joseph Prowen (Mozart in this case) also self-discloses to be grade 8, which is the highest in UK I believe.

Has anyone else noticed that the last note of the first section of the cadenza Mozart plays - the low G natural - sounds like he’s crossing a string to play it on the C string (ie on a viola)?

It's weird to try to say this; like, even though the actors aren't actual players and were faking the duel itself (it's a movie, people), they did great as far as making it look like they were playing. The whole scene is acted very well. If someone didn't know better, there wouldn't be a reason to doubt whether these 2 actors could really play
