Lyrics
[Verse 1]
I've been depressed since you left, tried to fill the hole with wine
Stopped the drugs when she came, cleaned my act up overnight
If you reach with no reply, I'll see you when I see you, man
You can't talk me through the fall if we don't know if I can land
Tried to grow, but the past, it tears me down to size
Tell the world how to process, but don't take the same advice
Half remember what I said, then the morning's filled with fear
Can't get a handle on my grief when every memory turns to tears
[Pre-Chorus]
It's been a long year and we're not even halfway there
[Chorus]
Is this the ending of our youth when pain starts takin' over?
I just don't know if I can ever just let it go
Everything's fallin' apart, when love is real, thereās never closure
I guess it's all part of life, but I can't help but feel low
We spend our youth with arms and hearts wide open
And then the dark gets in and that's the end of youth
[Verse 2]
I've been lost since the teens but pretend it's all alright
All my ups led to falls that led to try to end my life
Just a boy at the start, they lent on like a man
You were meant to be my friend and not to take all that you can
Disengaged to create, try to reinvent the wheel
No one knows what they want, so, I just give you what I feel
If I slip and get high, I know the low is always near
When I'm down, I never see you, when I'm up, you all appear
[Pre-Chorus]
It's been a long year and we're not even halfway there
[Chorus]
Is this the ending of our youth when pain starts takin' over?
I just don't know if I can ever just let it go
Everything's fallin' apart, when love is real, thereās never closure
I guess itās all part of life, but I can't help but feel low
We spend our youth with arms and hearts wide open
And then the dark gets in and that's the end of youth
[Bridge]
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
[Pre-Chorus]
It's been a long year and we're not even halfway there
[Chorus]
Is this the ending of our youth when pain starts takin' over?
I just don't know if I can ever just let it go
Everything's fallin' apart, when love is real, thereās never closure
I guess it's all part of life, but I can't help but feel low
We spend our youth with arms and hearts wide open
And then the dark gets in and that's the end of youth
We spend our youth with arms and hearts wide open
And then the dark gets in and that's the end of youth

I dare say Subtract is Ed's finest work yet.
When you lose someone you love... finding a way to say goodbye and move forward seems downright impossible. But if you're experiencing grief and struggling to find closure, know you're not alone. Allow yourself to feel your emotions, and cherish the memories that comfort you. "We keep this love in a photograph, we made these memories for ourselves." Thank you Ed ā¤

Whoever needs to hear this: I am 28. Most of my family members died. I went thru both relationship and friendship break-ups. My divorce and deaths crushed me. Let me tell you as the sad stuff piles up and support system circle gets smaller , sadness settles in and life becomes so much harder. It gets harder and harder to recover from losses and to adjust to new changes. It is all just human experience. Gotta stay positive and continue to try to get your fun self back after each sad event. Continue to hold onto that kid inside you and let it lose sometimes. Donāt give into depressive thoughts. Pray to God for support. You can do it ā¤

This song means a lot to me. It's just like Ed described... it feels like the end of the youth and pain starts taking over.
As a child everything was fine, but now as an adult it's very hard to find a day when I can say "everything is fine, this was a great day". I wish the old times would come back. Me back in the arms of the people dear to me who already passed away. No fears, no concerns for what comes next.

Probably my favourite song from the album. Childhood is over, and Ed communicates this perfectly.
