Pretty ironic that the Anglican Church would be upset about a King being married to a divorcee, considering that the sole reason that the Anglican Church exists is because Henry VIII wanted an annulment from Catherine.

Him abdicating was a blessing in disguise. George VI was FAR more suited to be King

This is the problem with monarchy. Edward would have been a disaster. It was sheer good luck that he abdicated and we got his brother instead, and then Queen Elizabeth. It could have been so much worse.

On his death thousands filed past his body because nothing revealed in this documentary had been made public. I remember my mother telling me it was such a shame he abdicated, he would've been a much better king. Only recently has she learned the truth.

In the moments before he died, King George V made an eerily accurate prophecy for his son and future king: “After I am dead, the boy will ruin himself in 12 months”

As you've noted, Edward wasn't an intellectual giant, but a charmer and rich person used to getting whatever he wanted. I think he thought he could have it all, and had the war turned out differently, his bet with those he sympathized with would have paid off.

It was the grace of God toward England that Edward abdicated and George came to the throne. George proved to be the kind of king England needed during WWII.

My father was a contemporary of Edward VIII. He always said that Edward never wanted to be King. He did not want the responsibility, so acting as a puppet monarch would have suited him very well.

Edward VIII was hopelessly inept, both intellectually & morally, to be a constitutional monarch. He had an abysmal work ethic and was easily manipulated. Wallis Simpson, his intellectual superior, misjudged her position and found herself trapped into a marriage to a man she held in disdain.

Edward showed himself to be indifferent to the duties and responsibilities of a monarch. He preferred to focus on his personal interests, and didn’t appear to be inclined to reform himself when he became king. He left red box papers lying around in his home, with water stains on them from having cocktail glasses set on them. He scraped off several of his official appearances onto brother Bertie and his wife, choosing instead to spend that time with his married mistresses. His scheming with the Nazis to regain his crown, which he wasn’t fit in character or inclination to wear. High treason, indolence, childishness and greed were his true character.

He was not "buried at the royal mausoleum at Frogmore". That structure contains only the remains of Victoria and Albert. He was buried with the lesser royals in the cemetery at Frogmore, as later was his widow. They are buried at the back with two small plain headstones.

I've heard that Elizabeth visited her estranged uncle in France just weeks before he died in 1972; he was very sick, but mustered the energy to stand up or sit up (depending which account you believe, ill in bed or ill and dressed presentably) and bow in reverence and respect to his niece, the queen.

One of the best documentary I have seen on Edward VIII.

In the 1980s my college professor, who worked in the British intelligence during WW2, told me Edward sent flattering letters to Nazi leaders. The intelligence services managed to retrieve the letters. After that Edward used his girlfriend as an excuse to abdicate. Apparently the powers that be in Britain, decided a Nazi admirer, could not remain king

To correct the error in the opening seconds (if not done already), George V was not the eldest son of his father, Edward VII. The eldest son, Prince Albert Victor, died of pneumonia before Edward even became king.

Let’s all agree that “there’s nothing so wonderful as an articulate and gossipy clergy man” is the best sentence ever.
