Marty Robbins - Ballad Of The Alamo

Martin David Robinson (September 26, 1925 December 8, 1982), known professionally as Marty Robbins, was an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist.

One of the most popular and successful American country and Western singers of his era, for most of his nearly four-decade career, Robbins was rarely far from the country music charts, and several of his songs also became pop hits.

The Alamo, originally known as Mission San Antonio de Valero, is a former Roman Catholic mission and fortress compound, now a museum, in San Antonio, Texas. The compound, which originally comprised a sanctuary and surrounding buildings, was built by the Spanish Empire in the 18th century for the education of local Native Americans after their conversion to Christianity. In 1793, the mission was secularized and soon abandoned. Ten years later, it became a fortress housing the Mexican Army group the Second Flying Company of San Carlos de Parras, who likely gave the mission the name "Alamo".

Mexican soldiers held the mission until December 1835, when General Martin Perfecto de Cos surrendered it to the Texian Army following the siege of Bexar. A relatively small number of Texian soldiers then occupied the compound. Texian General Sam Houston believed the Texians did not have the manpower to hold the fort and ordered Colonel James Bowie to destroy it. Bowie chose to disregard those orders and instead worked with Colonel James C. Neill to fortify the mission. On February 23, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna led a large force of Mexican soldiers into San Antonio de Bexar and promptly initiated a siege. The siege ended on March 6, when the Mexican army attacked the Alamo; by the end of the Battle of the Alamo all or almost all of the defenders were killed. When the Mexican army retreated from Texas at the end of the Texas Revolution, they tore down many of the Alamo walls and burned some of the buildings.

Visiting the Alamo, seeing the bullet holes, and how small the church is, it's stunning that 185 could hold out for 13 days against such an overwhelming force.

I went to elementary school in Texas. Our history class was 99% Alamo and 1% some other weird Texas facts.

I have stood in those buildings. I walked halls that were defended by some of the bravest men imaginable. I am Texan to the core. The courage that those men demonstrated is astounding.

As a native born Texan, the reason Texans are so loud, and proud , is because of the Alamo, and what happened there. We all carry in our hearts, and in our soul. the profound truth, that what our ancestors did in 1836, is a beacon to freedom everywhere. You can go overseas, to any country, and ask "Have you heard of the Alamo?" More times than naught, " you will get the answer "Yes." The Alamo will never be forgotten. Exceptional bravery, and honoor is NEVER forgotten.😢

In 1955, when my family moved from New York to San Antonio, the first place we went after setting up our US Air Force quarters, was visit The Alamo. Since then, it has my been and still is my favorite place to visit. I have been in all 50 states and 74 other countries. No other place makes me tear up like The Alamo and this song does likewise.

I named my first born son, William Barrett, after William Barret Travis. I was inspired to do so after reading the Travis letter, and my wife agreed. One week later we found out she was pregnant. He is as healthy and strong as his name...and for that I thank God.

I come from France . But I have always been transported by the heroes of Alamo. I discovered Alamo when I was a child with my brother, who died last year. We had the Alamo decal and the book. Defenders of Alamo are heroes for eternity .

This past Sept my wife and i took a road trip and one of our stops was to visit the Alamo . waited 50 years to finnally see it. I was not disappointed at all but very greatly moved. I stood outside the front of the church for a bit and thanked the Lord for the opportunity and the men who fought there.

Through most of elementary school, I was very uninvolved in history. I didn't pay attention to the textbooks and literally made up answers on tests and homework, bringing my grades down. But in fourth grade, I decided to pay attention to the story of the Alamo, and I was so fascinated by the story of the people there and how its legacy affected me (I was living in San Antonio at the time). That was the marker event that kept me actively engaged in history for every year after, and the story of the Alamo is one of my favorites.

This is who we are as Americans. It don't matter what race or religion we are. All of us are here because we love what this country stands for.I will defend her to my last breath. This country brings out the best in us. Even if we are outnumbered just like the guys in The Alamo. I see it all the time. DAMN I LOVE MY COUNTRY🇺🇲🇺🇲

As a Scot it made me proud to know so many of my countrymen fought at the Alamo, I was there in 92 and across from the Alamo is a cantina with the most amazing murals on the walls and the Scots can be seen.
