All you need is 1 pillow case or even a placemat to make this DIY. I thrifted mine for $3 for 2 which I highly recommend because there are so many amazing fabrics and prints to choose from.
The technique is super simple, only requiring a few straight seams to take shape.
Remember to be really creative with the pull cord and straps you chose, it will totally transform the design!
Have fun!

Three things make my Sunday perfect; lunch with my family, a Dunkin' iced coffee, and a new Orly-approved DIY. There's a Goodwill near my house, so I might go there and check out their linens section to see if I could make something like this for myself! 🙂

The fact that you make all this stuff and it doesn't look like hobo fashion or obvious thrift store flips is awesome. Everything looks uniquely custom and high end. That's not easy to do❤

This is a great project! I need to get gifts for a bunch of young ladies. These handbag/backpacks will be perfect! Now I need to get my mom's sewing machine serviced and figure out how to use it! Thanks Orly!

I just thrifted pillowcases like this 2 weeks ago…and they were waiting in my project pile! Great idea for the straps!

One of the best things about this DIY, if you remove the straps you can wash it!! I love this one! Thank you, Orly!❤

So cute! I would possibly add a pocket from jeans and glue on the inside for chapstick, keys, etc.

That's a super cute bag! I love that it's also washable. You could also take advantage of the opening in the "lining"/pillow encasement to stitch a pocket onto before closing the opening up. If you wanted a more structured bottom, you could use a cutting mat from the dollar tree, cut to size. Maybe it's possible to shorten the black strap by weaving a black or contrasting cord through the length, pulling it to gather the strap, attaching to the strap hardware, and leaving some ends out for fringe detail? Getting creative is exercise for the brain. It can be fun or sometimes challenging, but it will certainly encourage neuroplasticity, and that's always a good thing.

Hi Orly, love, LOVE! This. Simple, fun but gorgeous! I'm a backpack person. Not sure why. I'm 60 in less than 2 weeks. So our school bags weren't backpacks! I crochet also. So that touched me also. Lol and I wish there was time to crochet it myself. Which brings me to a suggestion. I have a problem. I am currently well, bed ridden. So it's killing me that I can't go to a thrift store. We have a Goodwill just a few blocks away. Some times one of my sons will look for me. Lol he's sweet to do it for me. But we live in a small village, so things may be hard to find. He will take pictures and send them to me while on the phone. My suggestion: ebay. They are more expensive like 2 for $15. There was variety and a few colors like mulberry. Also you can find just one and not two if you don't have plans for the second. Another similar option might be Facebook marketplace if you can find someone who ships. I'll probably get one from ebay and hand sew it as I can't sit for long periods of time. That was another thing about this project. You don't necessarily need a sewing machine. You hit this out of the ball park! I love it!
