Although he is used to being the voice and talent behind Gorillaz, Damon Albarn is giving Zane Lowe an up-close look at who he is.

Albarn invites Zane to his sacred Studio 13 in West London to tour the environment where he makes music. In the studio, Damon shows his archive of musical instruments, and gives a glimpse of his and Jamie Hewlettā€™s process for creating the illustrations associated with Gorillaz.

Damon and Zane wind down by discussing his experience at Coachella 2022 with Billie Eilish, new music, and collaborating with the likes of Bad Bunny, Stevie Nicks, and Tame Impala.

It's insane how Damon Albarn has stayed relevant and on the cutting edge of music for 30+ years.

This is one of the greatest Albarn interviews I've seen. Great to see him in his studio and in his element -- usually he seems annoyed to be doing press. Zane is also great in keeping up the enthusiasm while still matching Albarn's mood.

Damon: ā€œAnd hereā€™s my toilet seat - I bought it at B&Q in 2018 for 30 quidā€ Zane: ā€œWoah - thatā€™s amazing! Thatā€™s the greatest toilet seat Iā€™ve ever seen!ā€

Imagine being the Russian guy who made the Gorillaz fan art and watching Damon pointing it down. I would cry of happiness

I consider Damon as my generations David Bowie. I feel honored to be a 90's kid growing up with Gorillaz

I have a whole new level of admiration for Damon. What a wise and inventive man and musician. Weā€™re lucky the Gorillaz is still going on 20+ years later.

Wow, this is by the far the best (and most comprehensive) interview with him Iā€™ve ever watched. Zane works fantastically alongside him to uncover small details that other interviewers miss. Things that light him up and get him to speak from a new and authentic place about his artistry/what he envisions for the future. Fantastic all around. And what a lovely tribute at the end. Rest easy, Dave ā¤

I remember being at Glastonbury festival the year the Bobby Womacks ā€œthe bravest man in the universeā€ lp was released, and as a long time fan of both Damon and Bobby I went to watch the show. It was obviously incredible as you could imagine as Bobby did half the show centred around the album and the second half around his greatest hits. I remember at one point Damon turning to Bobby and saying ā€œlook Bobby, look at all the people that came out to see youā€ and it melted my soul as it felt like Bobby had doubted whether people would be interested in coming to see this old man of yesteryear perform. The dynamic between the 2 of them was wonderful to watch and listen to and it was obvious that there was a great deal of love and admiration between the 2 men. It will always go down as one of my favourite shows I have ever seen. The following year I was attending the festival and left on the Sunday, as I got into my car and drove the long journey home Bobby Womack started to play over the radio, it was highlights of his show the year prior and the radio presenter announced that Bobby had sadly passed away. Exactly a year to the day from his Glastonbury performance. I had to pull the car over as I was filled with tears and emotions sobbing as his beautiful voice sang through the speakers. Thank you Damon for creating the music and Bobby for everything he brought to all our lives with his talent.

Zane obviously 'gets' Damon and is able to poke at the things that interest him while trying to elicit answers to questions and just immediately moves on when a topic is skirted, really great to see such a genuine side to him.

Some Kind of Nature is probably my favorite track on Plastic Beach, so hearing that little anecdote about Lou Reed was a pretty incredible bit of backstory!

A living legend. When he gives up he will finally be seen as the one of the greatest ever. What a goat. He knows so much about music and loves it. What a man

Damon is probably the best song maker in my life right from day one. When I was younger he has had the most incredible impact in my life with his music career in everything

Iā€™m frequently baffled about why Damon hasnā€™t really gotten his dues as one of Englandā€™s greatest ever songwriters. The quality, range and breadth of imagination throughout his output is staggering. From Blur to Gorillaz, (with the Good, the Bad and the Queen, Mali Music, his solo stuff and many more besides sprinkled throughout) the quality has rarely dipped and I canā€™t think of many musicians who have been operating at the top of their game throughout four decades (Paul McCartney canā€™t even claim that, maybe Bowie is the only other who can?). The conversation always involves people like McCartney, Bowie, Kate Bush and the likes of Noel Gallagher (who isnā€™t a patch on Albarn IMO) but I think Damon is pound-for-pound as a good a songwriter/sonic architect/multimedia powerhouse as any of them. Heā€™s earned his spot in the pantheon of greats for sure.
