Part 2 of No Budget Films' Byzantine history audio epic "The 57 Years: Byzantium in Exile" set between the fall of the Byzantine capital Constantinople to the 4th Crusade in 1204 and the reconquest of 1261. The story of this video begins in 1222 with the Byzantines now establishing their temporary Empire of Nicaea in Asia Minor whereas a new ruler John III Doukas Vatatzes comes to power and will prove himself to be a successful ruler despite the challenging times. With Constantinople lost to the Latins, the Byzantine state broke apart and in Western Greece, the rebel Byzantine state of Epirus begins having ambitions to dominate Greece and rebuild the old empire challenging the growing empire of Nicaea which also has the same dream but other than them, even non-Byzantines particularly the new 2nd Bulgarian Empire and its ruler Ivan Asen II also has the dream to rebuild Byzantium. Meanwhile, the Crusader Latin Empire based in Constantinople despite just starting out is already weakened as John III of Nicaea, Theodore Komnenos Doukas of Epirus, and Ivan II of Bulgaria all race to see which of them will take Constantinople. The 57 years between 1204 and 1261 were possibly one of the most chaotic times in Byzantine history and here at No Budget Films, we are retelling the story of this time in our perspective with some made up stories and characters blended into this era of 13th century Byzantium.

I very much disagree with you calling the so called 'Second Bulgarian Empire' just Bulgaria as the Empire itself was Vlach. You also called Ioan as 'Ivan Asen', tho his name was Ioan, 'Ivan' being just a Bulgarianized form of the Vlach form "Ioan". He is depicted at Zograf Monastery on Mount Athos with the name "Ióann", never with 'Ivan'. About the name of the Empire, it is true that it was called by the Tsar's just "Bulgaria", however it is far from being the actual successor state to the old Bulgarian Empire and being actually Bulgarian. The cleric in the name of Ansbert who followed Frederick Barbarossa documents through which nations Frederick passed, and he refers to "Vlakia", to the so called 'Second Bulgarian Empire'. Western sources such Geoffroi de Villehardouin, Henri de Valenciennes and Robert de Clari calls the Empire "Vlachia" (old French" Blaquie/Blakie). We also have Byzantine one's like Niketas Choniates. Those writer's also tells us the race of Asănești being Vlach. And Choniates also writes that the leader's of the revolt at Târnovo in 1185 were the Vlach's.
