I liked the Diane years the best. The dynamic between her and Sam, the conflict with her and Carla, Diane's approach to fitting in with the other patrons at the bar,..it was all the recipe for a classic and unique show. Rebecca was fine the first couple seasons, but there wasn't the amount of depth in her character as Diane's, so things kind of dried up soon. I can say that show probably wouldn't have lasted another six years had they not had the change of one of the major characters.

My wife and I are 80s babies, so we always had cheers on the background- embedded in our earliest memories. But now we are doing a marathon of Cheers. Shelly Long was great. She made the show work with her contrasting intellectualism. She was spunky and optimistic. People who were turned on with Diane was the same reason why people were turned on with Frazier.
Coach was also amazing. He seemed like a genuine good person. But woody was excellent. In bringing his cards to the table. Kirstie is a phenomenal actress. But Rebecca was a "regular woman", and old school damsel. Diane held her own- an educated woman trying to flip the status quo of living in a man's world.

Rhea Perlman is a class act not to take the bait and go down and swill around in the pigpen. IMO, Cheers was a class act during the Diane years; it became more of an "everyman's" sitcom during the Rebecca years. Each served its own brand of audience with quality material suited for their respective goals.
