CLIP DESCRIPTION:
With Andrew (Dane DeHaan) raging out of control, Matt's (Alex Russell) forced to take him down.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
A loner (Dane DeHaan) escapes his abusive home life and discovers a mysterious crater that gives him and two fellow high school students psychokinetic powers in this found-footage-style superhero film from director Josh Trank and screenwriter Max Landis. DeHaan plays Andrew, a angsty teen whose mother is dying and whose father takes out his violent frustrations out on the boy. As a result, Andrew starts filming everything around him, including the dreadful night that he, his cousin Matt (Alex Russell) and the soon-to-be senior class president, Steve (Michael B. Jordan), wake up with superpowers after exploring a condemned piece of land housing an unexplained power source. The three bond over their newfound abilities, with Andrew clearly leading the pack in terms of control and strength. Despite their noble intentions, a darker streak appears in one of them as the other two try to take control over a situation that soon spirals into homicidal madness -- all of which is captured on camera.

Andrew got burned, bullied, beaten by his Dad, lives with the guilt of killing Steve, and his Mom died. Gets impaled by a spear that his cousin threw and dies. Wow, I feel bad for him.

I love how they've got guns pointed at them, and Matt tells Andrew "Don't hurt them!"

That scream and the destruction he was causing simultaneously was all of the pain that he’s suffered. To me it was an emotional scene, Matt didn’t know what he’s been through so he couldn’t fully understand especially the reason why Andrew tried killing his dad.

The most heartbreaking part about this scene, other than Andrew's rage just being shown full force, is seeing Matt pleading with him to stop, to the point where his voice is going hoarse from doing so. Seeing the emotion in his face from 1:56 to 2:10 go from simple "Please stop" to just to him realizing that his pleas are going unanswered, that Andrew is too far gone and he can't bring him back just makes my heart sink. And then there's that last few attempt where he says "Don't make me do this!!" right before he kills Andrew. The fact that he's crying right after he does it tells you all you need to know. All three characters suffered, and at the end of it all, Matt had to deal with the guilt of having to kill Andrew and the fact that he could have saved him (and by extension, possibly even Steve) if he had been there for him more and understood what he was going through.

This wasn’t just Andrew descending into madness.... This was Andrew losing his grip on his humanity, unleashing years of repressed rage, slowly but surely going feral, and succumbing to his inner demons as he destroys everything and everyone around him. I love how the entire movie showed Andrew SLOWLY but SURELY descends into a monster, even though he never wanted to in the first place. It was well paced and well timed.

I like this film because it shows truly what it would be like if a real world person got super powers. Not the marvel stuff

This has to be one of the most haunting, chilling finales of any superhero flick. It feels so real and raw, and is very emotionally engaging. You know Matt cares so much for Andrew, yet Andrew has completely gone overboard and has unleashed his full power upon the world. Too bad Trank burned all his bridges and completely went berserk during Fant4stic. He had a ton of potential, but now seems to be forever stuck in director's jail with only one cult hit to his credit, sort of like what happened with Troy Duffy.

Matt's arc is so deep. He becomes "the hero" out of obligation because Andrew's life has made him an unstoppable force of pain. He HAS to be put down. It's so tragic. Chronicle is such an underrated movie.

What I love about this movie is the subtle and slow build of someone so damaged and so hurt that they just want to scream so loud that the world can feel their pain. I really identified with Andrew because there have been times in my life I wanted to lash out and nothing in the world would stop me from causing as much pain as I had endured. Not even the pleading of a true friend. This movie was truly a modern telling of an ancient tragedy. Felt it to my core.
