It’s not every-day that a musician creates a hit single so popular that it racks up over a billion views – and it’s even rarer when that artist then drops off of the face of the planet – but somehow, that’s exactly what happened to the man behind “Somebody That I Used To Know”, the enigmatic singer/songwriter known as Gotye. That single was a pop-culture staple of the early 2010’s and took home a whole slew of awards including three Grammys for Record of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Alternative Music Album. And yet – soon after returning home from a World Tour, Gotye decided to move on from his world-famous persona to concentrate on a side-project, his alt-rock band The Basics. He’s also worked hard to ensure that a pioneer of the electronic music genre will never be forgotten by preserving the musical legacy of his friend and mentor, Jean-Jacques Perrey. So, no, Gotye isn’t passed away -- though you can bet that rumor sure made the rounds – instead, after achieving the very heights of success, he’s decided to pursue his true passions even if that means shrinking away from the mainstream spotlight.

Now, he's just somebody that we used to know

He actually apologised for making everyone listen to his song over and over again because of how many times radio stations were playing it

This is one impressive guy. Much respect for his choice to stay sane rather than turn into another manufactured Hollywood weirdo who is self obsessed and shallow.

A true artist indeed, driven by his own passion of the art rather then the demand of the global music industry

This man is a living art piece that just murkes the music industry. Brilliant. I always felt this song was so real. Most other top songs are just not so genuine like this

He's been proficient at cruising under the radar, however no one will ever forget that song. The singularity of a one-hit-legend alone emphasizes the unanticipated mystique with this dude. We'll all be scratching our heads for a long time.

Wouldn't it be nice if everyone lived like him. What a peaceful world we would live in. He has my utmost respect!

So much respect for this guy. Weird title for the video though. I think he did everything possible to make sure it didn’t ruin his life.

I had the pleasure of meeting Wally earlier this year. He took the to chat with me about his music and what he was working on. I swear, he is one of the nicest, most humble, down-to-earth people I've ever met. It seems crazy that he could have had it all yet he still chose to step out of the spotlight.

Not mad at him. I would have done the same thing: Got my money and bounced.

Ruined his life? WTF? So he had one huge hit. So what? He's living a comfortable life doing what he wants largely due to that song. More power to him. Why the assumption that everyone who has a global hit wants to have another? On the contrary, he was smart enough to not even attempt to top the nearly two billion views (and climbing) for this song, #1 in 23 countries and tens of millions in sales with his next effort. How do you top that? I enjoy his passion and his music even if it doesn't satisfy the sad people who think you're a failure if you don't top yourself every time or do the same thing over and over.

I have spoken with him on Facebook and he is a nice guy. I have loved his music for years and The Basics though not every song from the group. I still remember listening to the album Board face on a private beach on an island in Vanuatu while watching the sunset. ❤️

He made a ton of money to peruse his other projects, how did that 'ruin his life'?

I respect Gotye for almost all his decisions (even avoiding new music under his name alone). He is without doubt one of the few well-known musicians perpetually preserving his roots and keeping it about the music. I don't really like "Somebody that I Used to Know" all that much, but I'll always be grateful for it leading to one of my favorite modern artists. I really hope Wally continues to find fulfillment in his endeavors, no matter what the future holds.

Wally de Backer, aka Gotye, was NEVER a one hit wonder. Just because he only had one hit in your country, and reached number one all around the world, he has been an award winning musician in his home country of Australia. With many hit singles and albums since the early 2000's. It always annoys me when people call an artist a one hit wonder when they're from another country and just haven't released anything overseas. Believe me I've heard the term used here in Australia for the same reason. Mainly because their song was SO HUGE that it's virtually impossible to top it.
