Another good thing to bring is a first aid kit! You don't have to have much in it, but at least have some bandaids, including the really big ones, just in case you scrape your elbow and start bleeding everywhere and have to tape a pad to your arm and then walk to CVS at midnight (not that I'm speaking from experience...). Also, some schools have strict rules on the wattage of appliances you're allowed to bring, so look out for that. I wasn't able to find any kettles under the limit, so what I did instead was I brought a glass measuring cup that I could stick in the microwave and heat up water for ramen and tea and stuff.
And then for hanging stuff on walls, I love mounting putty (aka poster putty) for hanging up photos and posters and stuff. Whatever you do, don't hang stuff up with tape, that will take the paint off.
