The Secret Weapon behind John Mayers Groove: The Sean Hurley Interview
 Lossless
132,619 Views • Apr 1, 2024 • Click to toggle off description
The year is 2006 and John Mayer has just recorded a landmark album that will put his new trio on the map. Drummer/producer Steve Jordan had the great idea of bringing Willie Weeks AND Pino Palladino in to play bass on one track, with Pino adding his own accompaniment to Week’s muted 8th note figure.

When Sean Hurley landed the bass gig with John Mayer in 2008, he combined both bass lines! So in today's interview, Sean is going to break it down note-for-note for you – and show you how to make it sound like TWO bass players are playing at the same time. Along with demonstrating four more iconic John Mayer bass grooves.

Scott and Ian did a great job not stepping on each other’s toes and just letting the interview come naturally.

I simply love Sean’s humble, genuine and approachable demeanor. He is everything I deeply respect and admire in a musician. Or in a human being. Great guy!

Over one hour and a half without mentioning slap bass. What a pleasure this was. What a great guy.

I've had the pleasure of recording Sean a few times (and the embarrassment of almost deafening him with feedback once), and he's related that "be as relaxed at all times as in the practice room" advice to me. He's the consummate professional and has had such a long career precisely because he's such a deep and detailed thinker about every aspect of his playing. And he's a lovely chap.

DeLa (David LaBruyere) spent a lot of time playing duo gigs with John as he was developing these early tunes and played busier lines to fill space because it was just the two of them.

"Huge" , love the comment (when playing for an artist) "your not playing the room ,your playing for the artist and the band" . Giving the band the best bass line they can have . Way different than your brotherhood punk or blues band you been playing with for 15 years . Such good content ,thanks guys . I'm gonna re-watch this.

This is the “modern electric bass” for the sideman/songwriter bassist. Bravo all. Thanks Sean for showing why we should all keep digging deeper.

So many memorable quotes in here. I think my favorite is "You're either swinging with the band or you're reading the ink."

Man, what a genuine dude!! Love Sean. Can't wait till he does more on SBL. Next up, Pino Palladino?? I would put money towards that.

So so good / the sooner new bass players can be turned on the Sean and the way he approaches music, group interaction, seamless blending, modest taste, humble ability to pivot to what an artist is asking for, etc etc. Sean is an absoloute masterclass study in Bass. Inspiring. ❤ cheers boys!

What always blows me away is how good players like Sean are at hearing a reference track a couple times and then on the first or second take they drop the perfect line that moves right, has space for other players and just the right amount of simple and not. And they do it every time. Just so good. I know what Sean means about engineer kudos too. I volunteered to track bass for a song at a studio that teaches through the college here. I came in, set up and sat quiet while they went over what they were doing and why with the class. I tracked my line, pull off my headphones and I hear the control room open as the engineer / instructor says to the class "and that's why you use professionals. This went from a basic idea to a song in a single take." One of the best compliments ever because it wasn't directed at me. Could not have been more stoked.

Absolutely fantastic what Sean tell us about the tone control. When he says at homes the tone is all off cause we don't want that top scream he's speaking for all of us, but when he says the tone knob all the way up in a studio or band context, he's just being that old friend, tapping on our backs, giving invaluable free advice.
