I was on the empire's side .. but Zverev made a good point about players tossing the ball for a fake serve to gain time while waiting for the wind to pass, it's no different than waiting 5 seconds for the gust to pass

Love how the commentator said “quite right” straight away

The dude was bouncing the ball for 8 seconds straight

Don't think Zverev rages as the title suggests. I can see his point and he wasn't rude to the umpire but he does bounce the ball for a long time then stops at 0 so umpire quite right to issue warning

"Same on both sides" falls short though, a ball toss is much more affected by the wind because the ball is still and thrown high up into the air. Especially with a tall player like Zverev whose serve is a big weapon, he's not likely to wanna give up his serve advantage on a crucial point like this. And it's understandable he doesn't want to do a fake ball toss. In my opinion, umpire discretion is needed. In windy conditions, maybe a bit more leeway with the shot clock.

The ATP solution: put a anemometer so that when the wind speed is above e.g. 50, the timer pauses.

I think Sascha makes a fair point. Just like if someone in the crowd yells you get more time, you should get a little more time for wind.

He is hot when he gets hotheaded! He got a bit mad here, but is generally a lot calmer than he used to be so no need to bash him.

Zverev's right. I got to play doubles on court 5 two (2) days ago at the Miami Open. I had to chase the ball on my kick 2nd serve toss, because i throw it up higher to hit the ball on the descent. The wind was so very very bad that day, that any attempted lobs were blown out of the court. Yes, it was that type of windy day.

"I can do a fake ball toss." - Zverev I think this happens a lot with some players.

You can see how windy it is in his clothes

Zverev is right, its best to wait for the wind to stop before even tossing the ball. The umpire has clearly never played tennis in his life.

They need to add this in the rulebook. Time ran out or not, he has a point.

A ball toss should be an automatic fault since introduction of the shot clock. Some players toss the ball and not hit it over a dozen times in a single match. Madness.

He's right about the fake ball toss. Anyone could do it to give them more time against the wind. Shouldn't make a difference if you decide to wait the wind out instead of fake ball toss.

Just don’t wave that racket around as if about to hit the umpire and no drama. Actually good job Zverev

Highly doubt that was 50 mph wind. What do you want me to do? Serve the ball within the time limit. Greg even started the shot clock late after the last point, which was a very short point. The time voilation call is justified here. Needs to be inforced more.

Truth is the wind makes it unpredictable for both sides. The server has the control more often than the receiver... so it's more unfair for the receiver himself. Unless we got a wind at 90mph idk how 40 is gonna be a problem.
