Manny was my friend. He was a wonderful guy. I was heartbroken. I went to UF during that time. It was absolutely terrifying what we all went through. I cannot explain the utter fear we lived with every day. What the news doesn’t tell you is about the rumor mill. Each day they would say on the news and the radio that there were 8 bodies found, then 10, then TWENTY!!!! We seriously thought we couldn’t walk outside without being killed! I have PTSD from it til this day.

I was a sophomore at UF during the time of these murders. The palpable fear and anxiety was causing such bad dreams, I ended up withdrawing from school and leaving the state. I did eventually finish my degree at UF at a later date. This is the first time I’ve heard all the details of what happened. I hesitated for a long while before hitting the play button. It breaks my heart to hear what the victims went through. Their names have been on the 34th Street graffiti wall for 30+ years now.

I remember as a child, my mother once told me “If somebody threatens to kill you if you scream, scream.” Listening to stories like this makes me realise how right she was. Murderers never let you go, so even if it means getting hurt or being potentially killed, never give up on that small window of time to cry out for help. There are worse things than death.

I live in Gainesville and I’m a grad student at UF. We have a memorial for the victims on the 34th street graffiti wall. It’s been there for decades and never gets written over out of respect, and repainted whenever it does. Even during the 2020 protests, when the entire 34th street wall was covered in black paint, that memorial remained untouched. Never forget the victims.

i’m deaf with cochlear implants and audio is generally quite hard for me to understand, especially male voices but mr ballen is one of very few male/male voice storytellers i can understand with little to no difficulty. i also love that his body language is so open and he imitates some of the movements, makes it more interesting. i’ve been binging him soo much 😂

Don't know if Mr. Ballen will see this, however, since he asks for recommendations as to stories, would like to know if he could do a story on Marshall Lee Gore. He was already executed on Florida's death row. This is a wild story dating back to late 80's -early 90's. He was a psycho serial killer who was finally caught in Homestead/Redlands Florida. He rented a room at my friend's house, and, attempted last murder unsuccessfully while in tge company of another friend of mine. A true chameleon, charismatic, etc., had everyone fooled so no one had a clue. I met him and noticed something too friendly & weird about him. Thanks for listening.
